slower not faster. you know speed kills. any comments on this tragic loss.

This is a tough one to comment on because I could write a book about the topic -- from personal experience.

Who knows what goes on in people's heads or hearts that compel them to cast aside rational thinking and cause this kind of damage? My heart goes out to the families this tragedy impacted and I am reminded that, but for the grace of God, this could have been anyone or any of us.

Before I took my last drink almost 11 years ago, I know I did supremely stupid, reckless and dangerous things (including behind the wheel stuff). Some of these I actually remember. This could have easily been me in an event like this, but I am not well-known outside my little circle so no one would know.

We need to reach out to those around us who are in trouble like this. People who are in it rarely know it.

Well it' a tragedy on many levels. While I am sorry for the families involved and Dunn's buddy senseless and preventable death. Dunn was 100% guilty for the reckless act of driving drunk and killing himself and his passenger. I don't think anyone can dispute that.

I am sure all of us have drunken and drove, and thanked the man upstairs we got home in one piece, and learned our lesson. But, Dunn had a history of drunk driving, and even went far as twittering and posting pics of the fateful night of drinking.. To me, that's crazy and reckless.

As tragic as the accident was, the only resemblance of good news one can take out of this story was no other innocent driver (mother, father, son, daughter, etc..) was in harms way that early morning.

Going 132 in 55 is downright crazy and to mix alcohol is simply scary. I hope this event serves as a wake up call to those people out there who still think drinking and driving is okay.

I'm sorry for the families involved as well, however there is no sympathy from me for Ryan Dunn. He made an extremely stupid choice and paid for it. It would have been all to easy for another car to have been involved. Even without hitting another car this will impact quite a few people. His family and friends, the family and friends of the other guy in the car. It should have never happened but as i already said, he made the decision and paid for it with his life as well as that of his friend.

I wonder if the... remains.. will end up on documenting reality....
I only say this because that kind of stuff should be shown to teens... as a hey, by the way, if you get drunk and drive this could happen...

I agree with most, its a tragedy when anyone dies... but it was 100% preventable, and 100% his fault..

It's horrible.

I cannot justify anyone touching a motor vehicle when they've had too much to drink, and it happens all the time. I'll miss Dunn as a performer. Too many people drive drunk in this country, and the government's attempts at fixing the problem have been inadequate.

If someone has a string of DUI's, then fining them into debt and taking away their transportation to/from work is not going to stop their behavior. It's going to spiral them deeper into depression, which feeds their addiction. We should be treating the alcoholism that is the cause of the irresponsible behavior.

I agree with you but the big issue with your sound statement is that these people have to first recognize they have an issue and then want and accept help and unfortunately many don't. You just can't force people to admit their problem and take the steps to fix it. Look at All the people that go into rehab, not just volunterily, but forced and how many go right back to it after they get out. It's pretty sad, not just for them but for all the people they negativley touch.

For someone who a shred of insight and intelligence, that first DUI ought to be a clue.

Imagine the arrogance it takes to ignore that little issue, convince yourself that you don't have a problem, go to the bar and pound down large quantities of booze then get behind the wheel of your sports car and immediately rap it up to 140 mph.

It is not always arrogance that undoes people. Alcoholism is very powerful. It takes away rational thinking (among other things like money, jobs, friends, children, families, freedom, etc., etc.).

It's relative to each individual case. Some people are just rogues by nature, shirking the law even after they've been caught. While others have critical chemical dependency issues. There's a line between deliberate criminal act and chemically addicted urges. Where that line falls is beyond me. It's sad, really.

Could have been worse.

At least he only devastated the families of himself and his passenger (who voluntarily entered a vehicle driven by an intoxicated driver). At least there wasn't an innocent bystander or vehicle that was also involved.

More repugnant is when the drunk survives and the innocent suffer.
