Frame size is based on how tall you are. Stand over the bike. On a MT, there should be about 4" between the crossbar and your crotch. Road bike 2".

I have a Trek 990 MT bike. It's an older cro-moly frame. The ride is between the flexy Ti frame and the stiff aluminum frame. Carbon frame are a different animal. They can be anything from flexy to down right super stiff. The other thing is tire size. 26" or the new 29".
I'll have to use her bike as a template and measure myself. I'd go with an aluminum frame because the battery would be mounted within the triangle part inbetwen your knees.

No clue on tire size. Whatever would be most comfortable.

Not all of us have the time and energy to exercise every day duuuude. I just surpassed the 110 hr mark for biweekly tracking. Can't do much when you're tied to a desk for hours on end.

Tire size will depend on what you're going to use the bike for. If you're going to ride it primarily on the street then get a hybrid. If you get a hybrid it would be 700c and probably 38mm wide tires. If you go for a mountain bike, it would be 26" or 29". Widths really vary.

Doesn't matter which frame metal you use. Unless you need to go by tube diameter.

To do it right. You need to go to a bike shop to get measured.

26" tires have been around forever. The 29" came out a few years ago. Said to be less rolling resistance. Not everyone is doing them.

Other thing is brakes. Cantilevers brakes or disc. Go with disc's.

Gears. How many gears you want? There is some new stuff out there that I haven't kept up with.

All MT bike have front forks now. This is where it can get $$$$$ I have Marzocchi Bomber's on mine.

Isn't he just getting this bike to put an electric motor on it and tool about with the girlfriend? If so, seems to me it really doesnt matter which bike he gets as long as it has a seat, handlebars and brakes. Wouldnt a walmart bike work for this project? Don't get me wrong... my last bike was a Cervelo triathlon bike, so I understand. But buying a high end bike to strap an electric motor on seems like overkill.
