No hard driving for 3 separate driving periods prior to installation. After your car has been off and cooled for approx. 3-4 driving sessions, you may then proceed to wail on the throttle as you please.

Is there a specific time length that needs to be satisfied for these driving periods, or can it be variable?

I still don't understand where the term 'hot and cold cycles' fit into this? To me, according to what you said, all sessions seem cold, relatively speaking.

Also, who came up with this, and what exactly does this do (or not do)? Is this standard across all CBE or just F.I.?

I believe all that is needed is 3 normal driving periods. Once the exhaust is installed, drive the car normally, avoiding high revving and full throttle. Park the car, turn off, and let it cool, then repeat. I wouldn't worry about it too much; just take a few trips where the car reaches normal operating temperature and then park it in between trips. For the most part, exhausts usually change tone after a few hundred miles.

I wish I knew exactly what this does, but I can only assume that the heat cycles allow the muffler/resonator packing materials to properly settle and break in. Not sure if there is heat expansion involved, or if the carbon buildup as anything to do with this. I'd like to hear the full explanation also...
