Custom vs bolt on exhaust

I'm sorry if there is a thread on this I'm kind of at work and too busy to search everything. I got a quote for a custom cat back exhaust

Default Custom vs bolt on exhaust

I'm sorry if there is a thread on this I'm kind of at work and too busy to search everything.

I got a quote for a custom cat back exhaust from mufflertech in Sacramento for around $700-$800

But would a custom exhaust be as good as a let's say invidia or fast intention exhaust performance wise?

If there is a thread don't try and burn me at the stake just link it.

I appreciate any replies!

I have the FI LTH's, 12" resonators and the stainless cans. Top shelf stuff. Down side is that you have to wait for it.

I was wondering though if I were to get a custom exhaust would I potentially loose performance compared to an exhaust like yours?

The performance difference is likely to be minimal if the shop is decent. But think about the R&D that goes into an exhaust like Fast Intentions. You get what you pay for, and there's a good reason the FI exhaust is twice the price of the custom exhaust you were quoted.

A custom exhaust is mostly unproven and will be a hit/miss proposition. Of course it all depends who does the work. A reputable bolt-on system has been R&D'd, tested and comes with certain guarantees as far as horsepower gains, quality and fit and finish. Personally, I would go the aftermarket bolt-on route.

Go with a bolt on. I see no advantage of a custom exhaust unless you spend big bucks for it.

It looks like a reputable shop it's called mufflertech I live in Sacramento. They do work for dealerships I think for if you want to add an exhaust on the car before you get it along with other things. So I don't feel like the shop would be too much of an issue.

Maybe I'll have to call back and ask how the performance would differ from a bolt on.

Considering that the custom exhaust is most likely a 1-off they build directly on the car, it is impossible for them or anyone else to compare the performance of it to an off-the-shelf option because.........it doesn't exist until the make it for you.

As others have mentioned - in theory the off-the-shelf products will have integrated some R&D testing and time to refine the performance. In theory.

Most likely though, when we are talking about cat-back exhausts on an NA Z, you are splitting hairs on the performance end. They will all be pretty similar. I'd suggest getting the one that sounds the best to you... which will probably be difficult to predict if you choose the one that doesn't exist yet.

That's what I wanted to hear, so the difference in performance would be negligible I should be concerned with sound at this point?

Something to think about here is this is your dime that’s being spent on exhaust here. Unless this shop you speak of has experience in exhaust fabrication and testing/development of exhausts on our Z cars then power gains across the board could be minimal coming from your stock exhaust system. Ask this shop if they say that they have experience building exhaust systems for the Nissan 370Z then ask to see their customers vehicles they built exhaust systems for. Exhaust is so subjective among Z enthusiasts that everyone seems to like something different. I would look for a bolt on exhaust that has already been proven to make power on our cars that you like the sound of not everyone else. Try to hear other people’s 370Z with exhaust you like in person or listen to exhaust clips in places like YouTube etc. and go from there.
