OEM shift knob removal (SEARCHED)

Has anyone here tried using a heat gun or other heat source to heat the knob (and loctite underneath)? I'll be installing my new knob sometime next week, and was

Has anyone here tried using a heat gun or other heat source to heat the knob (and loctite underneath)? I'll be installing my new knob sometime next week, and was thinking of this approach. In many applications, heating loctite melts it and its ability to lock the threads. Figured i might try this approach . . . any opinions?

Mine come off with just a good twist. No pliers or other tools, just my kung fu grip.

If you were going to try this, I would suggest popping the shift ring up and heating up the shift stalk itself, as that would carry the heat better than just heating the knob.

rag wrapped around the knob + a strap wrench. no damage and it comes off easy

yeah i put a big thick *** towl around it, and the layers mustve shifted and I was only biting down on maybe 1 layer of cloth on the towl. Twisted the shift lever off and found out it bit down on the plastic and leather. Oh well, just order another shift knob when I take my TWM one off if I sell it.

I'm pretty sure I had did a short vid on this. My daughter and I did this. We had to use vice grips, but it come off quick.

Learned alot from the DIY. So, I just finished putting my Nismo TI shift knob on and it was a b!tch. Broke the strap wrench I bought from sear's and got a heavy duty one from home depot. I love the look and feel of the shift knob.

I did mine over the weekend too with a strap wrench and I worked a treat. It was still a b*tch to get off though but no damage to the oem knob.

Also did my gtr start button too.



edit:
i put the rubber grommet under the shift boot too but had to cut some of it off because it wouldnt fit lol..

I made about 20 rotations before I realized that my vice grips weren't holding. No damage. I managed to make a small tear my shift boot too, since the vice grips were accidentally clamped down on it. I haven't replaced it yet, although, I will one of these days.

I used the same strategy as most everyone here. Vice grips + heavy duty strap wrench. Stock knob survived. It was a lot more effort than it needed to be but the results were very much worth it.

what i did was I held the shift knob with a wrench and drifted the car around in circles.

did the same thing had my wife hold the shifter with channelocks except i didnt use tape, i got this idea to use my football glove with takified cow hide grip (which she though was stupid) but it worked and i got to save the oem knob with no damage
