Default No Key & “S-Mode” error after getting my windshield tinted

GM 370Z Forum,

Yesterday morning I went to a location in Tampa, Florida to get my front windshield tinted. After the tinting was set and completed (and one of the workers stalled out my Z, which I was mad as hell about) I paid and when back in my car only to find the shift knob was a bit loose and my “S-Mode” Error flashed on my LCD screen.

I can usually reset this “S-Mode” issue by taking on the positive battery terminal for a few minutes and then putting it back on. However, this time that doesn’t seem to fix the issue. To make things more strange, when I parked at home I had my car on when I opened my drivers side door when a “no key” alert blinked. The fob was in my cup holder behind my shifter the entire ride home and I have no idea why the fob now has lost connection to the Z unless it’s in the fobgina.

I’m letting the car sit it the sun to hopefully “dry” a bit but after 24hrs my fob is still not communicating with the Z to unlock or lock the doors from any distance. I am starting to believe there was some water damage done to the electronics found under the windshield.

What are your guesses? Do you think these issues are connected?

I checked the fixtures underneath the shifter column and everything is connected & no it’s not the Steering Wheel Lock, I replaced that already. The car can start only when the fob is inside the fobgina via RFID but that’s it. I only have 1 fob for the vehicle as well so I’m unable go and try my other fob because I bought the car used with only 1. I have tried replacing my battery in my fob as well.

Thanks

First thing I’d try would be a new battery in the fob.

Thanks for the reply, I bought a brand new Duracell 2032 yesterday and put it into the fob and these same issues are happening. Do you think these issues are related?

If it works when you put it in the fobgina it most certainly is a power issue. I’d try another new battery from a different source. If that doesn’t work, I’d say you have a malfunctioning fob.

It might not be a battery issue. I had a similar problem, turns out the sensor in the center console that detects the fob had failed.

Did you pull up the shifter console and check to see if the harness for s-mode was attached?

Thank you guys for the input. I have pulled up the center console to look at the connections of all of the wiring harnesses and they all seem to be secure and attached. But just because they are secure doesn’t mean they are all working.

I will try a new battery, but seeing as the fob was working perfectly fine, along with the “S-Mode”, before I don’t necessarily believe it’s the battery in the fob and yes, I have checked to make sure it is on the correct side.

The sensor for the fob in the console is all the way in the back. you can find a new one online.

Maybe go to autozone and have them run an OBDII scan?

I might go run by there later if I can, I do have an appointment at Local Nissan dealership at 10 AM tomorrow morning. Hopefully, by this time tomorrow we can find out what the code or issue was/is.

I have read on different threads of the no key alert and the S-Mode malfunctioning but I’ve never seen a thread where both of these happen at the same time.

Default Problem addressed

So apparently I need a new fob.. so for the 1 fob and reprogramming it is around $350. I asked them what in fact was the issues and he said it was the connection with the fob and vehicle (obviously).

The S-Mode was due to The Clutch Switch Pedal Grommet (part number : 46584-S0100) which is $3 on Z1. This piece interacts with the clutch pedal switch and with out one there is nothing that can press up against the actuator of the switch.

So if you have an issue with your Cruise Control or S-Mode, check to see if your grommets are all in!!!!!

You should be able to get a fob off eBay for around ~70+shipping. Still need to get it reprogramed at Nissan but that should be much cheaper maybe ~100.

Glad you got it figured out. I just wanted to add these fobs are sensitive mofos. Don't smack them, drop them, hit them or get moisture anywhere near them.

I had a similar issue a month ago after dropping my fob. Wound up replacing the batts in both. Still got that annoying little yellow key light. Took both my fobs into the car with me. Unlocked and locked with both fobs and the indicator light went away. Ya know, just typical weird Nissan things.

This may be the route I take as there was a surprise today right before I was ready to pick up the Z. The New Fob wouldn’t reprogram with the vehicle, so now they ordered a new “keyless remote entry unit” which is $600?!??

To be honest, I do not want to spend that kind of money and I think there are better ways to figure out this issue. I’ll keep you guys posted tomorrow as I plan on getting the car.. since it has been there since Friday

When that shop did your front windshield they didnt set anything down to soak up the water that was dripping down as they worked. It likely messed up some eletronics. Apparently this is common with cheap or shitty tinting places.

What is the difference if you keep it there or in the cup holder
Your dealer obviously is just guessing on your dime
