I believe you save some gas by throwing it into neutral when in auto and stopped.
I do it at long lights and when I am just sitting somewhere waiting for someone! I was also told that throwing the car in neutral in an automatic going downhill to coast, isn't a good thing to do. I was doing it for awhile because the car would just coast forever and I never needed to use the gas pedal. Engine or something doesn't get properly lubricated.
