They absolutely know what they are doing--giving directions to the lowest common denominator to minimize their risk. 5W-30 is common and safe...but there are several other oils you might want to use for specific use cases.

Nissan recommended ester oil anyways...do you use that?

I've always used Castrol synthetic 5w-30. I'm boosted for 5 almost 6k miles and gonna do a UOA. I'll try Mobil synthetic 0w-40 n after 2 oil changes of using Mobil synthetic 0w-40 I'll do another UOA.

Define 200+? 205 210 220 all normal good temps. 270 280 290 okay your having a problem.

I use an oil with ester because Nissan says its a good idea. And its been proven to be effective. Running another a different weight oil has.not

According To a MB1 rep I spoke w/ @ sema, 0w40 has ester as part of its ingredient list.

I believe all M1 synthetic oils contain esters

I have m1 0w40. This is synthetic under the euro standard, not the same as the US standard.

This is GTR's factory fill.
Great UOA's are the quantitative proof.
Nissan "ester" oil is just normal non-syn oil with ester additive to quiet down the vvel. I remembered reading about poor UOA's in vq37 application.

If weight is an issue, "German Castro" 5w30 is excellent. Redline 5w30 is another good one.

But oil is like a voodoo topic, some feel better to just stick with what manufacturer says, others rely on UOA's, just do whatever you want.

If your oil change interval is not too long, exercise precaution on cold start, and normal driving takes up 99.9 percent of the miles on your odo, result of this debate won't matter too much I think.

I've heard rumors that some folks have found a 5w-30 GC in the US....I guess we can hope.

i ran mobil1's 0W-40 awhile back and noticed the oil warmed up much quicker in the mornings. buuuuuut i also noticed i burned more of it everytime i checked my oil level which is about once every two weeks.

i went back to 5w-30 and ill stay with it. redline was great too but you HAVE to be religious about changing it every 3k miles. after that the oil looks like crap!

The Mobil 1 0w40 is their best oil. I wouldn't use any of the API certified (5w30) Mobil 1 oils in this engine because the low ZDDP and high iron levels often reported by Blackstone tests. If you want to stay the stock weight the Redline 5w30 is the best option.
