No offense but is this your first manual? You never ever want to shift to first while still moving. Never had a manual or driven a manual of any customers car of any brand that will allow you to shift to first while moving. Put it in first after you have stopped.

yep after 5mph there's a good amount of resistance when trying to back into 5th

Shifting into first while moving is not that big of a deal ... if done properly.

I recommended that OP not shift until stopped because he/she doesn't seem to have a lot of experience with a manual. I've downshifted many manuals into first at "high" speed - you just have to time it right (and maybe do a little fancy foot work). With some practice, OP should be able to do so too.

But I haven't driven a manual 370Z and maybe there's something special about the 6MT, so YMMV.

Match engine speed to road speed and you can shift how ever you like.

Not sure how smooth it is on a z as I haven't driven the manual but what you say is true in theory just in other cars I have driven it seems 1st is always very picky about matching the engine speed perfectly vs the other gears. Really it doesn't seem worth it. Not like these cars don't have enough power to resume accel from 2nd.

Its worth it when you're on autox and want the power right away verses waiting for 3500 to roll around. Practice makes perfect but you gotta pay to play and keep the fluids fresh. I used to rev match 1st up to 4500ish. Takes some foot work but it sure is a blast. I miss my Z dearly but opportunity has created the need for a truck so I will return to the Z platform one day. As you can see I'm still addicted to the forums because I love the car so much

I'm not gonna gunk up the topic so OP, enjoy!
