Sockletless Lines Beware!
I installed this oil cooler to the letter (thanks ModShack!).
However I had a problem with the socketless lines - one let go while I was driving! I noticed the front tires slipping and the anti-lock brakes kicking in. Then I smelled oil & looked in the rear view mirror to see most of my oil on the pavement. I pulled over and shut 'er down immediately. After a tow, I jacked up the car and found one of the hoses had let go and sprayed the undertray with all of the oil. I'm cleaning it up now and will put it back together with clamps. I'd recommend using clamps to anyone who is adding this oil cooler. Has anyone else had problems? |
Wow. There seems to be a lot of oil hose fittings blowing here lately. Not cool.

I believe this is the 2nd reported issue? Definitely makes me a little worried, has anyone who had issues try contacting Aeroquip to see what they say?

Did you lube the inside of the hose when you assembled it? (I did). Wondering if this is a variable in breaking the inner liner. Regardless, I think clamping is now the way to go on these.. I'll source smooth band clamps from http://www.mcmaster.com and update the original post with pics when I get this done.. |

The post that Modshack refers to quotes the Aeroquip guy as saying not to use clamps or ties as they will cut the inner tube. Have this kit on order now and am not sure what to do.

I decided to do this cooler b/c of the Texas summers, so the real test is in 110 degree weather with the air conditioner and running hard. I'll keep posting as we test it out. I'm a bit worried now that I've clamped it b/c it might cut the inner tubes. I'm going to contact Aeroquip and I'll post the conversation. Kevin |

To Eaton: I am contacting you about one of your hose products that put me in a very dangerous situation recently. I purchased the AER-FBN1000-10 Aeroquip Socketless Hose and installed it on an oil cooler on my car. I followed these instructions and it was performing admirably. http://www.the370z.com/diy-section-d...ttsa-pics.html However while driving on Friday (2/26/10) the hose connecting to the front of the oil cooler let go and dropped all of my car's oil onto the road. As you may know, this could have been the end of my engine, but I recognized the problem and shut it down before any damage occured. What I'd like to know: 1) How could this have happened if I installed the product correctly? 2) How to keep this from happening again (add clamps?) 3) Why should I trust clampless hoses (especially your products) now that one let go and cost me $175 (tow & parts) and a full day of labor to clean it up and put the car back together? I will be posting our correspondence on www.the370Z.com forum so the folks who are purchasing your products (including me) can be reassured that we are working with a upstanding and reputable company. Describe "let go" better.
Did the hose pop off of the fitting? Did it rip/tear? How clean and flat were your cuts? How much tension was on the hose where it failed? |
Here's what Racer Parts Wholesale had to say:
"The FC5898 number refers to the color only. The FC332 is the blue socketless hose. If you look on the hose it will also be labelled as -10. The hose must be cut square and the fitting pressed into the hose until it bottoms under the collar. Do not use hose clamps." So if you don't use clamps then you worry about the hose slipping off. If you do use clamps you worry about the inner hose getting messed up. :confused: |
Maybe my approach created a failsafe. I snugged up Ties in the valley areas, not tight enough to cut the hose on the ridges, but snug enough that the hose could not expand over the ridge areas on the fitting. Dunno. Just seemed like a logical fail safe to me. I'll be pulling the lower cover this week to do my first change since the install (3500 miles) and will report back if there is any hose creep...

I talked with Aeroquip to get a better understanding of the differences between the FC598 and FC332 hoses. I was concerned because their catalog show the FC598 as a crimp connection hose. Apparently they are the same hose other than color. The crimp connector has to be used for industrial, high pressure applications and is OK for socketless connections for the oil cooler.

i believe a while ago i told you guys you should go with crimped fittings. it is not just the pressure rating you need to look at it is the temperature swings that it sees that willcause the failure. trust me I work on equipment that runs at 5000PSI and is worth millions. for the little extra cash crimped is the way to go.

I spent 23 years in aerospce testing jet engines and we used aeroquip fittings but we used the braided stainless lines with the crimped fittings. I know they cost more but I would have more peice of mind knowing that the fittiings are going to hold. I am in the process of puting mine together. I have seen installations where the fittings are pointed down so that you can drain the system. I am going to put a tee at the bottom of each port. Pipe thread to 90 deg and 180 deg fitting, hoses will attach to the 90 deg fittings and a AN cap with saftey wire hole so I can saftey wire the cap to the tee so it will not come loose or loose it, I just may saftey wire all the fittings. When I drain the oil off comes the cap. I don,t want to lose a motor. The problem may be with the inside diameter of the hode you are using. I would check aeroquip guide for proper inside diameter of hose to use. They need to feel as they will not go on at all, you need to lube it up to get it on. You may get some expansion on the hose from the heat but I would think it would be minimal. Don't get me wrong but there are a few things that I would not DYI and this is one of them.

Seriously, if you have the aptitude to do your own wrenching, then you can install an oil cooler. If not—don't. Not being sarcastic or condescending...some people have it, others don't. |
A lot of people must be doing a lot of oil cooler install. Why? I ordered parts from Parts Racer and the 90 deg fitting is out of stock! :)

My mistake! They are NOT (repeat NOT) recommended.

To be specific, each hose can be pushed 1 inch in either direction yet are still held by zip ties to keep them in place. I do have the hoses wrapped in a leftover hose on the parts that might touch other areas of the vehicle so there are no worn areas that may cause a problem. I found this post from Aeroquip socketless hose (FC598) - anyone else with issues? - Page 2 - LS1TECH "The Aeroquip tech sheets indicate the FC598 should be used with crimped fittings (page 18 of the doc you linked to on post #6). Maybe the socketless fittings will still work with this hose (?), but all of the Aeroquip documentation I have found makes no mention of it; only the crimped fittings are noted for this hose. Excuse me if I'm off base on this. I recently got a dry sump system I'll be fitting to a 4-cylinder, and it came with a length of FC598 and four socketless fittings. After reading the Aeroquip spec sheets, I'm thinking I should either get some crimped fittings or some different hose (FC332 socketless hose), and a search led me here." Based on the post at ls1tech and here at the370z, I think I will go ahead and change my order to the blue fc332. I have nothing to lose except having a blue color. I have also searched the web and it appears that when you slide the hose to the fitting, it is supposed to be a "major workout." Others even resort to heating the hose to help in installation. Did you guys encounter this norm, or did yours just slide over with just little force? |
mine was pretty difficult to get on, especially the last 1/2 inch, why push it though and try the blue hoses when for about the same amount I can have my hose place make ones that will definitely not separate. 110 +shipping and paypal fees

Aeroquip's Performance Products FBN and FBV SOCKETLESS hoses are not designed for any type of clamp to place over the fitting once the fitting is inserted into the hose. Aeroquip's Performance Products FBN hose is the same construction as FC598 and has been formally qualified with SOCKETLESS fittings at the 250 PSI pressure rating as stated in the Aeroquip Performance Products catalog for FBN hose. FC598 is not listed in the Aeroquip Industrial catalog with SOCKETLESS fittings, because of the advertised 100R6 pressure rating. In you want to achieve 100R6 pressures with FC598 you need a crimp fitting. Eric Durrant Manager, Aeroquip Performance Products One other thing to remember is that when the hose is pressurized it actually contracts by up to 10% because of the braid angle of the reinforcement in the hose. Slack is very important in routing the hose. Just finished installing the Modshack oil cooler kit. Did a couple of things differently. Instead of drilling two holes in the plastic panels I used a 2 1/8" hole saw and just made one and used 7" of 1/8 hose and fabricated a large grommet. Be very careful installing the elbow into the core as you can cross thread very easily. I did this and ended up taking it to a professional to get a new elbow (a brass fitting and a little more heavy duty) and he installed them for me. Of course, after I started it up there was a leak at the core with one of the brass fittings. He had used blue locktite and probably should have used locktite sealant. So I removed this fitting and went back to the blue elbow fitting and used teflon tape and everything seems to be working okay. The socketless fittings went on pretty easily with some SAE 30 lubricant and per Aeroquip's recommendation decided not to use any cable ties.
