You do have to have the the phone hooked up to the HU via USB/hdmi-lightning adapter thingy, and the USB has to be plugged into USB1 slot (top).
Once you plug in then apple carplay auto launches on the HU. At least thats how it works for me. If I recall correctly, Android users can do their thing wirelessly. I usually just put my phone upside down in the cup holder.
