I have the Sony XAV-AX100 and LOVE it. Looks really clean, sounds good, no tacky looking shiny plastic. Has an actual volume knob. You can see the phone mount on the right. I switched the cigarette adapter under the glovebox to a USB port, so I can switch cables easily. Clean looking while running Android Auto or Carplay.

You can see it here kinda.

agreed. The way you phrase the question is not very good. There are brand whores that will argue all day as to why theirs is better than the others. No different than reading reviews of products online. Even the highest rated product has a few bad reviews.... Some idiots will even rate the products one star because the friggin' mailman was late.
choose YOUR favorite..... Functionality would be my #1 priority, appearance would not be as important.
Why choose a unit that looks "cool" if it doesn't do what you want/need?

Agree with RonRizz. However, I'll also admit that I tend to gravitate towards Pioneer decks

I went with a cheapo pioneer x2800BS ($210).

Kinda one of those you get what you pay for, but it does the job.

2 Questions:

1) Is there actually a tangible sound quality difference when using say the same usb files from the low end to the high end pioneers? mine has the full eq of some of the higher end units, but in terms of sound quality assuming you're using external amps, is there a real/actual difference?

2) Are the higher end pioneers any faster in terms of responsiveness to inputs on the touchscreen?

Default Have had 2 different head units

Installed a Pioneer AVH-X5800BHS in November 2016; it lasted almost one year before the right audio channel failed. Tried to get it repaired under the 1-year warranty and learned that warranty was unavailable to me because I didn't purchase the unit from one of the less than one dozen "authorized retailers"...I bought it from an Amazon storefront retailer. Decided to not throw more good money after bad and bought a Kenwood Excelon DDX9904S. Have only had it a couple of months but I really like it. The Pioneer had an automated EQ setup function but the Kenwood has a wide range of setup features that allowed me to better tune the system and sound to my tastes (mostly R&B and jazz).

I also installed front facing and backup cameras, SiriusXM, a remote combination USB & AV input in the center console, and a second USB input in the glove compartment. I was able to retain the factory SiriusXM and FM antennas. Used an Idatalink Maestro SW for steering wheel controls and a wiring harness from Harness House ($20 on Amazon) that includes pinouts for the steering wheel controls. Did not have to tap into any of the wires on the factory side of the harness. Did have to install 3 jumpers on the Bluetooth module harness in order to retain steering wheel control functions.

Full disclosure, I'm running the factory Bose audio speakers and amp but it sounds good to me. Also, be aware that Kenwood has the same warranty limitation but if you buy from an authorized retailer, the Kenwood Excelon head unit has a 2-year warranty.

IMO a head unit is all about functionality. Also our cars are don't really isolate the outside noise that well where sound quality of a system would be so important. I am very happy with my 250 dollar Chinese Joying head unit. While it's far from perfect it can do more then any other big name system out there.

Just wanted to add:

The time alignment feature on my cheapo pioneer has made a WORLD of difference in the sound simply by spending about 5 minutes making adjustments.

Basically it's like going from public transportation to a Bugatti!

I actually had a lot of regrets going with the pioneer and hertz hsk's, until now!

The pioneer decks come with some amazing features that folks don't realize... the processing features you mention are one of them! Another feature that attracted me in particular was the "Network mode" that allows you to use the 4 channels of the internal amp to run your front components active. Perfect for our cars with no rears and gets me a little more juice to the speakers.

I'm in agreement with you. Either a droid head unit or something with mirroring would give a lot more functionality.

Yeah it truly just made an unbelievable difference. Finally the best sounding system I've owned among several different cars, I spent about maybe 5 minutes in the TA section, just unbelievable! Now get to mess around with the EQ more and see how much more abuse they can take

Cannot even imagine how good others running better than Hertz HSK165's sound bi amped... but I've got the stereo integrity stuff on my list now!

I saw 5star car audio on youtube is indicating the new Kenwoods for 2018 will be all the rage apparently, my only gripe with the pioneer is that it seems like I have to STAB the screen to get it to respond at times, and it just seems slow to react, but, it was $210...
