If you are storing them for only a month or two, it will be hard to go wrong as long as you keep them out of the weather. With the weight of the car gone, storing the tires upright for 1-2 months shouldn't be a big deal. Unless you leave them out in the desert, sunlight shouldn't be a big factor for something that spends a good portion of its time outside in normal use. But, yeah, if you're spending good money on tires, cool, dry, dark, and flat (horiz) is the way to go.
