Default Oil! What do you use?

Hey guys, quick poll for those of us that live here on the surface of the sun and still want to modify our cars:

What's your favorite oil for your modified Z?

Thanks!

I was asking local people :P

Not because I want ideas on what I want to use myself, but because I want to get a feel for what people are using locally.

I use Nissan's Ester oil, and so far, I am the ONLY person in our DFW group that runs at 180-190...

Redline is a popular one. The ester oil is so expensive... But oil temps (without a cooler) probably have more to do with driving style and oil weight than oil brand, wouldn't you think?

Here's a sample from tonight, this is the 5th pull.

Granted, this is on a new crankcase full of high quality oil, meaning it heats up (and cools down) more slowly than oil that's had several hundred miles on it, and my oil cooler is badass. My point is that selecting the proper weight has more to do with temperature stability than brand or formula does, and I don't think most folks with our cars choose the right weight for their environment/configuration.

This is all IMO, of course, I'm no engineer.

I was also curious what weights folks are using, rather than just MFG, should have been more specific, my bad!

I believe this oil talk is all crap. My RSX and my Sky Redline, Expedtion all have VVT dual OHC or SOHC, high RPM.

I think the problem lies in the fact that the motor has no oil cooler even my Expedtion has and oil cooler. My Sky has a cooler for everything. My RSX has the same size oil/water cooler as the 2012 370z. This is on a 2.0! My sky and RSX have oil squirters as well to help cool the motor.

This engine seems like it was designed to fit many cars and the just shoe horned it in the Z. Most of Nissans line up are base on the same chassis, wiring and motor including the Z.

I would not be surprised if it does not have oil squirters that spray on the piston skirts which help keep the motor and oil cool. The valve train design -the VVT was in my 1985 Toyota MR2. Yet was in my 1991 Toyota MR2.

In any case I am at my own cost going to add an oil cooler which is sad for a car at this price range. I am going to use Mobile 1 which I use in all my cars and some have 300k and still going strong!

To me any car that need to use a specialized oil is not special it's a design failure. A failure which will cost the buyer extra at every change and modification to run properly.

A company that can design the GTR can't seem to put together a decent motor for the 370z enthusiasts car is not a company I really want to stay with in the future.

i agree with you, compdoc, about the lack of an oil cooler (pre 2012) for the price. but im at peace with the design not being perfect. partially because aside from keeping the Z platform alive all these years, it has improved with each generation, and partially because i have to give credit to nissan for everything they are bringing to the industry lately. everything from the amazing performance of the GTR, in comparison to every other sports car in the world (at an unbeatable price point), to the Leaf, the introduction of syncro rev match, etc. those guys have their hands full, haha!
