looks like we landed another defender. I've been researching this guy, hes really good in the air and built pretty stout, although hes already 30, he only has about 2-3 good seasons left.

Sebastien Squillaci set for Arsenal medical on Monday - Transfers - ESPN Soccernet

phelan 08-22-2010 07:27 PM

i'll take squillaci. he's still in good form right now, but i'm concerned he's another big injury risk to our defensive line...

thoughts on GK situation? i'd love to get shay given but it sounds like man city would rather strangle themselves before giving him up. schwarzer...eh, an improvement i guess?

I'm thinking Schwarzers main impact is going to be as a mentor for the younger keepers (Mannone and Szereserrafsdff)

Keepers can usually play into their 40's, look at Seaman, and more currently, Friedel, so I think he'd be a good addition but unfortunately I dont think AW is going to give more than a 2.5 mil bid.

I like the Squillaci signing-- I've been a big fan of his since he was at Lyon (read: played with him on FIFA## & liked him because he was 80+).

His wikipedia page already says he plays for Arsenal.

As far as the 4-4-2 goes, I think if its played as a diamond midfield with the central midfielder slotted in just behind the left and right forward, this could be a great transition for Arsenal. While I love the tried and tested 4-3-3, its more about a quick attack/counter attack and utilizes less possession which Arsenal needs more of, sure we can piece together a quick and dangerous attack, but time management is a huge problem for us when we play more possession based teams like Barca or ManUre.

phelan 08-23-2010 01:13 PM

I'm not sure if I agree with his 'improved drastically'. He has definitely improved, and he has an eye for goal now, but he still had plenty of moments during the Blackpool game which made me go "Oh dear god, what are you doing", i.e. not playing in Arshavin who was wide open (or was it Rosicky), and powering a shot clear wide of goal instead. He still has a lot to learn, and if he switches to a striker role, I could see him making marked improvements.

I read that article on gunninghawk, thoughts on some fans clamoring for more Carlos Vela? He played decent for the national team, but I'm apparently in the minority of the unconvinced. I'd actually roll the dice with Walcott more than Vela, although his one-man play at injury time was quite good to watch. Too bad he couldn't get a goal at the end of it for his theatrics.

I didnt say that he as a player improved drastically, I said his final ball did, his crossing has become substantially more accurate lately and hes actually picking out heads instead of sending them in over the goal or into spaces where nobody is making a run, they've become more cutting/precise and I, as a striker, can appreciate a nice low hard driven cross to my feet because all it takes is a easy touch to put the ball on goal with pace.

And as far as Vela, he has the speed, he has the ball control, but at times holds the ball too long and gets himself into situations where hes boxed in and doesnt know what to do. And as far as his jolly theatrics the other day, i LMFAO'ed when I seen him do all that hard work only to duff the ball with his weak foot, reminds me of me and my left, i'll never switch sides and shoot because it usually ends up with an embarrassing result:icon17:

Red370 08-23-2010 01:27 PM

twas quite funny, I will say though, have you seen RvP's right footer? while not quite as powerful as his left, he can shoot pretty damn good with it.

I don't usually read comments on articles, but for some reason decided to read the ones on Lassana Diarra possibly joining Spurs. The following comment made me lol.

Quote:

Why would 8.5m for Diarra be impossible? You don't rate a players value based on who they play for. You base it on what they have to offer, and in the case of Diarra, it's not much. Real Madrid spent waaaay over the top for him when they paid Pompey 18m for him. I still remember having a good laugh at that when I heard it. I could only imagine how that initial conversation went...

Ring, ring...

Hello..

Harry Redknapp please...

Speaking...

This is Real Madrid. We want to offer you 15m for Lass Diara...

15m for who???

Okay 'Arry, you're a tough cookie. We'll give you 18m. Final offer...

(Redknapp covers the phone and yells to his assistant) Hey Billy, Real Madrid want to give us 18m for Lass f***ing Diara?

Are they f***ing bonkers?

(Harry chuckles)

Okay Real Madrid, you've player your cards well. We hate to lose him (chuckle, chuckle), but for 18m quid, I can't really turn you away (snicker, snicker).

Okay then Harry, it's a deal. I'll fax you the papers in the morning. Good-bye...

Hey Billy, we just sold Lass Diara to Real Ma' F***ing Drid for 18m quid. Let's call Alex and head down to the track and celebrate. What a bunch of f***ing morons...

i've already admitted it though. if nothing comes arsenal's way this year, we lose cesc. and i'd really, REALLY like to see that not happen.

wenger has already admitted it's time for this group to start winning some silverware. they're not kids anymore. but if the team stays together in the next year or two, with chelsea's age and manchester arguably fossilized (except for cheechareeetoe), arsenal can be the big name in the EPL for a long time.

I dont know. Chelsea and Man U are so successful they could always bring in young talent to their team. It will be difficult for Arsenal since they havent shown capability to bring in any trophies

phelan 08-26-2010 12:58 PM

Wow, CL draw is done, I was JUST thinking yesterday it'd be really weird to get Arsenal matched against Shakhtar Donetsk, and see Eduardo again in opposing colors...

It'll be good to see him again, I'm still bitter over his basically career-ending injury at the hands of rugby players...er...right. At least the rest of the group doesn't look bad. Braga went nuts last season, if they're on top of their game, look out. But not worried about Belgrade.

I hope Inter shits on the Sp*rs. Barca should have a cakewalk through group stages. I bet blu is amused by Bayern - Roma. Totti vs. Schweiny! Who will you side with, bwu?!

My early picks (bold wins, italics runner up):
Group A: Inter, Werder Bremen, Sp*rs, Twente
Group B: Lyon, Benfica, Schalke, Tel-Aviv
Group C: ManUre, Valencia, Rangers, Bursaspor
Group D: Barca, Panathinaikos, Copenhagen, Rubin Kazan
Group E: Bayern, Roma, Basel, Cluj
Group F: Chelsea, Marseille, Moscow, Zilina
Group G: AC Milan, Real Madrid, Ajax, Auxerre
Group H: Arsenal, Shakhtar Donetsk, Braga, Partizan

You really don't think Mourinho can turn Real around?? As much as i love AC Milan i don't see them making it through easily....i foresee another last year groud G advancement being: Real and Milan (struggling)
