Question... How do I make a path selection from the pen tool (CS3) Also, how do I make a separate selection within the first (inside it) without losing the original

How do I make a path selection from the pen tool (CS3) Also, how do I make a separate selection within the first (inside it) without losing the original path (outer)? Did that make sense?
