D5100 -> D7000

My brain is exploding from the increased complexity. And it's not even that complex of a camera. Good lord!

Lol, it just takes some getting use to. They're really not that different. Just a few more knobs and buttons on the outside instead of having to go through the menus. I have the same camera, so feel free to ask about anything.

I've still got stuff to learn on it too. This is my first DSLR so I'm starting from the beginning. I'm looking to purchase a Nikon 35mm 1.8G prme end soon, it takes time really nice pictures and is pretty fast and sharp. Seems like a good deal for $200.

Zdayz 2014!!

LunaZ 12-17-2013 03:49 PM

What's there to learn?
Put it on M, pick an ISO, choose the correct aperture and shutter speed. How hard can it be? :stirthepot:

i realize that, but i think it's my brain going through the D5100 motions still. i used that camera for so long it's almost second nature, so going to the D7000 is a learning curve to re-figure out all of the settings i liked, etc. thanks for the offer though, i might ask you a few things when i can get out there and shoot more with it

It's a toss up. Both have their advantages and really comes down to preference. Not saying the video is bad on the Nikon, but if you shoot video, I'd go with the Canon. They have better software for that. The Nikon has a somewhat "better" AF system, but that too is subjective. The D610/600 has a slightly better dynamic range over the 6D. The difference is going to be pretty slim and you'd really have to push both to it's limits to notice a difference in your shots. I'd go with the one you can get a better deal on and one that feels good in your hands.

I would take future lens upgrades into consideration as well.

DSLR Shots and Discussions

I think we're all getting "photo-lazy".

How 'bout an impromptu Christmas photo challenge. Not really a competition, just a nudge to get everyone to shoot some good pics of the season.

Here's a couple of starters.

This isn't a hokey Instagram frame. It's as-shot. I was inside a small covered bridge shooting out. (while freezing my hoo-hoos off)

And this is last Christmas of my great-nephew. Not real Christmas-y, but it always cracks me up and it was on Christmas. :icon17:

Huck 01-16-2014 12:41 AM

and you guys probably know by now that I loveeeeee crazy surreal looking pics with lots of color. This was the sunset in my back yard a few days ago, honestly I didn't have to do a WHOLE bunch of post processing to get it to look like this, the sky looked like it was on fire that evening.

I climbed on the roof of the mall where I work a few days ago and took this...

there is so much negative space in this picture is insane.

Huck 01-16-2014 10:45 AM

Negative space in photography means space not being occupied by anything?

Zdayz 2014!!

Meulen 01-16-2014 10:45 AM

Nice pics! I just got a DSLR camera and am trying to learn photography. Can anyone recommend a good book or something to learn from?

Huck 01-16-2014 10:48 AM

This thread offers lots of good info, and you can pm me with any questions you have, I'm not a professional yet but I've got a decent understanding.

thanks man! I'm starting from scratch and trying to play with different settings on the camera. So far it's not turning out so good! lol

Huck 01-16-2014 10:52 AM

What are you trying to do? What kind of pics?

For me the key (and this is super basic) was learning the way that shutter speed, iso, and aperture all affected each other.

What kind of problems are you having?

I'm pretty sure he is referring to the large gap of unfilled photo in the middle between the cars and above the cars.

I assume he is referring to creating a perfect balance in between the distance of the cars. Im not too sure.. A good crop and quick crappy PS work can solve that though...

i mean what ^ said, there's too much empty space for my liking. i understand what he was trying to do, but eyes are not naturally drawn to the edges of a photo. having that massive negative space in the middle WITHOUT any leads to the edges makes it look awkward IMO.

Huck 01-16-2014 01:56 PM

Yeah, and I agree with you. This wasn't a photoshoot or anything though, just a quick snap while we all grabbed beer and chips inside lol.

Horrible editing, I'm sure, but I always liked the way this one appeared to be taken in the air.
