Thanks guys and gals! I'd share a few more but I don't want to clutter the thread.

This was a whoopsie since I forgot to turn on my flash but I like how it turned out, coulda been better with a polarizer but it was dim enough as it was and ISO1000 was pushing it.

Err 05 on my T3 :(

I don't trust myself to try to force the flash up to clean the spring.

Good incentive to not use the pop up flash ;)

I never do. However, I have a buyer lined up for next week and I ensured him that everything was working fine. :(

Is the flash stuck or are you just getting an error?

Oh, in that case, I need to STFU.

This is relative to a 7D, but I don't why it would be different on your Rebel. It's at least a starting point: Uh oh: EOS 7D pop-up flash not openings, Flash control menu options incorrect - Canon Digital Photography Forums

It might be the something as simple as debris caught in the mechanism that pop's it up. If you hear it clicking & trying to pop up, something got stuck in there. You can try to GENTLY help it pop-up while it's clicking...but don't force it.

If you don't hear it clicking....sounds like you may have to bring it in. Are you out of the warranty period?

For some reason I never saw this or LunaZ's response. I read up on the issue and was able to use my fingernail to lift it up while pushing the release button. I was able to get it working enough to sell it but then the buyer started having issues. I never registered it with Canon so I asked him to try to do that and go through the warranty if possible. If not, I told him that what I read was that the spring needed to be cleaned and maybe use a drop of WD40 on a Q-Tip on the spring.

I'm now having withdrawals. :(

So I found a used T4i with the 18-135mm lens at a local pawn shop. I haven't purchased yet, but what are the thoughts on it?

I don't think you're going to see a lot of difference between that and the t3i that you had. As far as the lens goes, most of the kit lenses are iffy at best. I personally think they are more overpriced than the L-series lenses as far as bang-for-the buck value.

Here's a comparison between the two.

How much are they asking for the camera and lens?

I had a T3 before, no i. :/

Not sure on price, he said he could work a deal of course. Sticker read $615

i grabbed the D7000 during black friday, included an 18-140 lens for $800 flat. i sold the 18-140 lens already for 400 bucks (which was really weird for me since i thought CL people would put up a fight for that price), so i basically now run a 35mm 1.4 prime + my 18-200 3.5-5.6 to take 99% of my pictures

I've been on vacation in Costa Rica over Thanksgiving week. Here's a couple of pictures:

Hummingbirds in Monteverde

The wildlife shots were handheld with a rented Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens

The beach was with a tripod with my 18-200mm kit lens all on my Canon 60D. I shot 3 bracketed frames and processed in Photomatix HDR software.

Alright photo buddies. I need a recommendation for a wireless remote trigger for my Canon. There seems to be a gazillion out there and just want some recommendations from people with experience.

Do you mean like a light trigger or just a wireless remote? At the risk of showing off my noob-ness, I got one of the amazon specials for like $3 and its worked great. It has a range of about 35-40 feet and has never given me any problems.

Wireless remote to control the camera, not the flash.

Huck 12-13-2013 12:24 AM

Ok then yeah, my comment stands. My super cheap remote works great and helps with night shots.

I am back after an absence of a few months and the first thing I saw was an incredible butterfly shot from you.. Cant find it now but just wanted to say how great it was..

All this has inspired me to get off my butt and do some shooting so soon I will post a few things of my own..not the snapshots of Italy but some more serious thing but I just wanted to again say your are quite the wildlife photographer!

ZMan8 12-16-2013 12:15 PM

I'm looking at tripods..what do you guys think of this:
Amazon.com: AmazonBasics 70-inch Adjustable Pistol Grip Head Tripod: Camera & Photo

There are not many reviews yet for this product, which I think is relatively new. I also looked at monfrotto tripods, but they can get high in price for a good setup. I'm just an amateur, and my gear does not get abused much.

I'm not familiar with it, but with all of the options that it gives you, it wouldn't be a bad place to start.
The thing that pops out in my mind can be either very good or very bad. The quick-release latches on the legs can be a very good thing, allowing quick adjustability, but they can also be a very bad thing if they don't hold tightly.
$80 is a relatively cheap investment if it works well. I paid almost that much for my ball head only.

The reviews all look pretty good.

*Warning: If you do buy it, watch those rubber feet. Anything like that tends to fall off. I've got one on my monopod and I've "lost" the dumb thing at least three times. Had to wander around in my yard for about a half and hour before I finally found it.

It really depends on what you'll be using it for. If you're using it outdoors in possible high traffic, windy or unstable areas...you should think about spending that money towards a more durable one. Would you really trust an $80 tripod holding your $$$$ camera & lens? For light duty...and I mean indoors and no possibility of people hitting it.... it may be okay. I sure as hell wouldn't leave my gear on that thing unattended though.

I'd stick to Manfrotto or Vanguard. Their less expensive travel ones with a ball head are better choices. I would look into used tripods of those brands if you don't want to spend a ton. The better tripods are also easier to sell if you plan to upgrade later.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll take a look at the Travel manfrotto ones real quick. It's tough to say what I will use it for because I'm still expanding and learning for my photography hobby. mostly I will always be near the tripod, but I do agree with your sentiment.
