I need to invest in a monopod as well

m4a1mustang 05-29-2012 12:48 PM

I'm about to order one. Not spending a **** ton. Found that one made by Canon gets good reviews. Willing to try.

I was always disappointed in mono and tripods until I spent a decent amount on my Manfrotto/Bogen setup.

Let us know how the Canon mono works. What model is it?

m4a1mustang 05-29-2012 01:20 PM

It's the model 500. I'll let you know how it goes.

I have a $100-150 range SLIK tripod that I am very happy with.

m4a1mustang 05-29-2012 01:21 PM

I am going to try to get that Sigma 50-500 f4-6.3 for my birthday (September). :yum:

....oh and nice work Steve.

Get one of the sprayers to spray the dust off. No risk if youre not wiping the sensor with something..

I'm not overly thrilled with the quality of these shots (first time shooting anything of this sort. Learning on the fly), but I wanted to share because they crack me up every time I look at them.

This was at a mud run a couple of weeks ago. The station that the people were at had three hay rolls that they had to jump onto. They were a decent distance apart and the second photo shows the results for this poor (snicker) girl.

Here is the monopod I am using -- very sturdy and handy.

I have the exact same one. No complaints.

Dallaz 05-30-2012 02:31 PM

Shot using my monopod. Its a Manfrotto and I think the model is the 680B but maybe thats just a number they slapped on their and has nothing to do with the model. Bought it a year or 2 ago and love it

I was thinking about getting a monopod, but decided to just get a lightweight tripod instead. I have a Vanguard Alta with a ball head.

Cool beans. I've used a SLIK tripod that felt nice. Unfortunately I've had 2 friends with quality issues on the SLIKs. I'm assuming yours is holding up?

Bracket your exposures, dodge/burn, etc. Can't make out anything in the pic besides the sky lol. And post bigger pics! lol

It's doing fine granted I haven't put it through heavy use. It feels quite sturdy, though, so I don't foresee any problems. .

Lately, I've been very lazy and out of the photography game. I've been experimenting with some different post processing routes as you can see in some of the pics. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't.

Any pointers, comments, and criticism are welcome!

I've got a bunch of filters being delivered today for my various lenses. :)

Luna, I got the 60D book yesterday. Lots of good stuff in there! Thank you very much for the recommendation. Planning on reading it cover to cover.

I also got my 64 GB sd card. No more running out of space. The 8GB card goes back to my Rebel XS.

What filters did you get? Also, 64 GB -- huge.

That's what she says. ;)

Followed promptly by "now get to the damn gym and make that belly smaller!"

I got a 67mm and 52mm polarizing filter. And a lens hood since it looks cool. :icon14:

And one of those rocket blower sensor cleaning jobs, a lens cleaning kit, and a lens pen.

And a Canon 500 monopod.

And a 67mm neutral density filter.

And a genuine Canon lens cap since I lost one of mine.

:yum:

Dang!
Sounds like me when I started building my kit LOL!
I'm tapped out for a bit after building my AB lighting kit, buying proper software and a new Wacom tablet. And, and, and... LOL!

m4a1mustang 05-31-2012 08:52 AM

I might rent that Sigma 50-500 lens to see how I like it. A friend of mine recommended BorrowLenses.com and they rent that lens. I can get it for 1 week for $92, then determine if it's worth $1500 to buy. My plan is to ask for it for my birthday, but I want to make sure I like it.

I will also need something good for my weekend at Richmond for the September NASCAR weekend (I have full media access courtesy of Gamestop and Joe Gibbs Racing) so I can take some good shots. I think that 50-500 would be pretty versatile at a race track... walking around the garage and trying to get track shots.

Just need to have a 18-xx with me as well so my friend can take a pic of me with Danica Patrick. I'm going to ask her to take a pic with me like she's my girlfriend. I wonder how many people will escort me away. :)

I love my Wacom. I wanted the Cintiq so bad, but $$$ :( I settled for the Intuos.

I was just trying to show the perspective I've gotten using my monopod since some people seemed interested in purchasing one. I don't think bracketing would work too well while trying to hold the monopod still with the camera 15+ feet in the air, I do however bracket exposures often when using my tripod. The original shot showed way more detail through the dynamic range, I was just kind of trying to play with extremes when editing it knowing I wasn't going to use it for anything, just to see what kind of texture I could get out of the sky and what color I could get, because in the original shot, the exposure was made for the foreground (cars and what not) and the sky was pretty blown out.

That's awesome stuff!
It's hard to match the moments and emotions of photo-journalistic photos when we're pointing our cameras at cars and buildings.
