VR is the Nikon term, IS is the Canon term  Personally, I hate VR/IS for panning or rolling shots. I've played with all the different modes/combos of settings and I still get better shots without VR. I can pan an 80mph car handheld at 1/60 (160mm++) and get better results with VR off than with it on.
