That was for a contest, people could sign up and if selected (at random), they could put up a $500 deposit and be one of the first 86.
Great idea, but sucks for people who were selected:

That's the same thing Scion does for all their cars that aren't on the lot. If you 'order' one, you have to put down a $500 refundable deposit. That's what I had to do back in '06. It wasn't that bad, but then again I had a price already known... so I can see peoples discomfort when it comes to not knowing, but if you've got the ability to put a deposit down without even knowing what it's gonna cost, I'm sure it's not going to break your bank...

"Fast" is a matter of perspective. If you drive exotics or race cars, the 370z is probably pretty slow to you. If your frame of reference is cars in the 370z's price range or less, however, it's probably quick.

So of course someone who has driven a 370z is going to judge the BRZ against those numbers -- but that doesn't necessarily make their frame of reference more valid.

Also, what is "fast"? In a straight line? Around a corner? On an autocross course?
