they provide a valuable service, which is basically letting people be lazy. Apparently a lot of people are willing to pay for that.

It is their job to profit. It is the informed consumer's job to step them down on price and not be bullied.

I got a good deal at $5500 for the Sentra, with tax credit its about $6k, if I sold it on craigslist, it might bring $6K - $6.5K .

The Asian family that bought the car was probably taken advantage of as their English wasn't that good and it is common for dealers to really rip off minorities and women that don't know any better.

Some Asian older people I know are hard working people, came to the country with very little English and a completely new way of life. Well, they need a car to get around and being unfamiliar with how stealerships are, they usually get rip off.
For me, I do my research, walk in and ask for a price. Either give me yes or no, don't give me that crap where you have to talk to a manager. Man, I hate the process of buying a car

We just traded our 2005 Sentra SE 1.8 L with 78k miles on it and 5 yrs. spent in NY winters and 3 in Nevada, basically traded it on a loaded 2013 accord sedan.

We got $5500 trade in for it and got the 2013 Accord at invoice.

About a week later we are at the dog park and we see an Asian family pull up in our old car , I told him it was my old car and asked how much he paid for it.

He said he paid $11,400 for the car OTD with extended warranty. I know the dealer listed the car for 1 day at $8999 and it sold quick.

I didn't have the heart to tell him we only paid $12,500 for it 8 yrs. ago, just goes to show you how they a dealer will really rip someone off.

$6000-$7500 would have been more appropriate price for the old sentra.
-I bought my 2001 WS.6 in 2007 for $13K +TTL. 72K on the odo.
-I traded it in in 2010 with 149K on the odo, a blown AC compressor, paint peeling off the hood, and took a trade vehicle instead of $7500 cash I was offered.
-They listed the car for $13,999 when I drove by a few weeks later (hood re-painted, AC fixed).
-They sold it for $8,XXX according to a sales rep there.

Lay out the bottom line price you're going to pay and if they can't do that just walk out. They want your business and will do everything in their power to try to sell you the car. Just stick to your price and you'll be golden.
Every worked in the business? I have. A lot of people in this thread don't have a clue what they are talking about.

That said, I don't haggle or debate when I buy a car, and I still get a good deal and there are no hard feelings on either side, and I don't take much time doing the deal, either.

How?

Figure out the lowest price you can fly and buy for. Huge volume dealers in California, etc. post their prices online, and many sell under invoice. You print it up, take it to your local dealer of choice, and say "Look, I live here and I want my money to stay in the local economy. I found the exact car I want, and am overdue for a vacation and love to drive. The car I want is in California (or wherever), and I can get it for "$X" amount. A plane ticket will cost me *whatever*, and I want to get away, anyway. If I can get the same vehicle through you guys, though, I'd rather go *this place* instead, in my new car on a first road-trip, and keep my money in the local business. Can you get me within a plane-ticket of this one?

If they can't, then go fly and drive that car home and have fun on your vacation!

It's totally reasonable, it leaves zero room for haggling, and if they can't hit the number...well, noone was ugly about it and noone was bluffing.

95% of people think negotiation is acting tough and throwing out unreasonable claims/prices/etc...

So many have so much to learn...

I wouldn't say you act tough, but you cannot be a doormat either. When you waffle or lose focus, cost will increase.

It is not unreasonable toughness, it is vigilance and strength.

If you claim that salesmen do not use underhanded tactics to bilk you out of extra cash, then I'm afraid we'll have to disagree.

Negotiation is all about reservation price, aspiration price, and zone of possible agreement, as well as each party's alternative to a negotiated agreement.

There is only one position of negotiation. Knee on the chest and knife at the throat.

I hate dealership, I've been ripped off plenty but I now know they can't be trusted one bit no matter what.
When I bought my Z I ended up suing them and got most of my money back, over $10k, don't ask. That's me going in educated.

Gosh next thing we might hear are that credit card companies charge some people way too much interest! Or that some plumbers rip people off? What's the world coming to?
