um...... the pistons and rods are the only difference that i'm aware of (at least it used to be before the carrera got direct injection with the 997.5 model). the transmissions are the same, just regeared with a taller 1st gear to make sure the caymanS isn't faster than the carrera 2. it wouldn't cost them any more to make the cayman faster, it's already got the chassis and brakes for it, porsche just holds it back. irregardless, the caymanS is still a performance bargain for the price, especially considering its one of the best cars you will ever drive... ever. it's that good, trust me

The word is that Porsche holds the Cayman back, but that it would actually be a better setup because the 911 has its iconic/outdated rear engine setup.

I believe that the Cayman is good to drive. But, I was under the impression (perhaps via Porscheophile 911 propaganda) that the Cayman and Boxster engines are not built to the same standards as the engines for the flagship 911 models. If true, then bringing it up 30 some HP might overly stress the engine without the better tolerances that a better made engine has. It might be entirely possible to add the missing HP for under 17k (the difference between the base 911 and the Cayman S), but could they do it in a way that maintains build quality and reliability?
