Default the New 2022 Subaru BRZ

Looks like Subaru did a good job on this, do like it might have to give a look and trade in the miata. But the last version I had a problem, I was just a bit too tall for it

It should be a good update to the BRZ but I don't think I like the styling changes. Something about it feels like a mix of a few cars. Maybe in person I'll feel different.

As a former owner of an 86 I've been following the 2nd gen closely out of curiousity.

I don't hate the new BRZ styling wise, but it looks a bit 'off' for me. I think the new nose and the fender vent behind the front wheel have been done a bit awkwardly. They could clean that up and integrate the lines better so it flows into the car instead of looking like a cheap aftermarket bodykit.

Engine upgrades are OK. They mostly seem to have focused on eliminating the mid-range torque dip which made the 1st gen feel (and actually be) too slow under hard acceleration. I kinda like that they stayed NA, as the number of affordable NA sports coupes is rapidly shrinking.

Still, I think this car needs more powah from factory. 228HP is an OK step up from 205HP, but that was already too little for the current market. I feel like the BRZ is a car that would become much more desirable with 260HP - basically at that point it would be like a ten year old Cayman you can buy new.

Still, I hope it sells well to send the signal to the automakers that there is still a market for a simple, affordable, RWD coupe. If they don't sell, Toyota/Subaru and other makers will stop offering cars like this new.

I've done my part to encourage the Japanese to keep making these sports cars. I bought an 86 brand new in 2015, and a 370Z brand new this year. If things work out I will be in the market for another brand new Japanese RWD coupe in about 5 years too, so hopefully the Supra, 400Z and BRZ/86 are all still on sale by then.

The comparison that will be intersting and immediate is Supra 2.0 vs this new BRZ.

The 2nd gen has finally become the coupe version the S2000 I was hoping for. Glad that they took the AP2 approach to create a more usable mid range from a larger displacement. It will a good time for enthusiasts in a couple years when we have new generation of Brz, Golf R, Civic Type R and Sti on the market.

That will be interesting.

I suspect the BRZ will still be the better drivers car. It will probably still lose in the straight line acceleration tests, but I reckon with a decent set of tyres and coilovers, the new BRZ would be neck and neck with the 2.0 Supra around a track, due to being lighter and not that far behind on power once in its powerband. Which could and should make the 2.0 Supra appear quite a bit over-priced. No wonder they didn't stick the turbo FA24 in the BRZ with 260HP - who the heck would buy the heavier 2.0 Supra then?

I can appreciate an incremental evolution, but I'm in the boat that thinks 250+hp should've been the target, or even just a turbo so it becomes more attractive as an "accessible" tuner toy.

But I am guessing they had to stay distant from the I4 Supra.

I feel like it's just a winderd workaround answer. Doesn't take away from how good the car may be, but quite frankly, the fact that kind of discussion needs to be pitched clearly is a type of damage control. The EJ has literally existed since 1989.

But on the other hand, I'm not sure if that video is the result of Hagerty being asked to do that, or Hagerty just needing to make content.

The GT300 build is cool. The lights translate perfectly into the wider shape. Reminds me of the HSV-10 — where I wonder backwards, what would that car have looked like in street form? Not to go OT, but I'm still hung up on how cool that could've been if they somehow translated the engine to a street application.

GR 86 variant

https://www.carscoops.com/2021/06/th...lacks-a-turbo/

I like the appearance of length in the side profile. That rocker panel line goes well with the front imo, although those corner slashes are getting played out (it's even been on the Nismo 370Z). I'm lukewarm about the rear.

That auto shift knob setup is a bit lol. But it seems nice generally otherwise.

The supposed $30k is still something to wrap my head around. I get that the Miata is at around $27k already — so I guess with the niche value and whatever supply challenges we've heard of, cars simply just cost this much. Meanwhile I've seen the I-4 Supra in the high $40's with some markups. That's sounds like a real ripoff in my mind.

Makes me wonder the upcoming Z can really slot between these price brackets and be all that we speculate it can be.
