Default Porsche Macan S as a daily driver?

Hey guys,

So after some thought, I’m considering getting a 2nd car once the Z is paid off. The criteria is the following - 4 doors and can hold up to 5 people. Since the Z sits pretty low and to have something different, I was considering the Macan S - a used one of course but was wondering the following:

1. Anyone on here ever own one - a S trim or higher?
2. If so, what was your experience with it overall - did it still feel like a drivers car even though its a SUV?
3. Researching a little bit on the Porsche forums - are the maintenance costs as ridiculous as what I’m seeing - some people are quoting the $300/oil change and then justifying it as the ‘pay to play’ type of deal. Don’t mind paying for something if it’s necessary but oil is oil as well as filters - unless I’m missing something.

Regardless, bc this was a sporty SUV that would be different than the Z - it is a car I was considering. Another option not in the SUV range would be a slightly used Golf R or a slightly used Honda Civic Type R - again, thinking 4 doors and still fun to drive. Love my Z and leaning toward keeping it for a long long time - would just like to consider a 2nd vehicle for when there is more than just myself in teh car.

Thanks in advance.

Wow, big range of options there! :-)

Never owned one, but spent some time on track with a really nice guy who did. Was a Turbo, actually, and tuned. But wicked fast. Definitely not your uncle's SUV. Porsche quality all around. Definite nice car. But, and it is a big, Kim Kardashian sized but, the cost of ownership if you go the dealer service route is a significant deterrent to the 99% like you and me. This problem will be similar with any //M or AMG performance SUV.

I hope that others here, and people on Porsche/Macan boards can help you better with what to watch out for. I'm sure there are - there is for every make/model.

If you are considering a Civic Type R, look at the Veloster N while you are at it. Probably a better warranty and I think a car of equal value. Have seen both driven in anger, and they are certainly equally capable. Veloster sounds better! Golf R has a huge amount of aftermarket parts available for it if that is your thing. But it isn't a stand-out car like the others you mention (although outstanding performance, I understand).

Maybe you would stress and prioritize what you want out of another vehicle. I'm reading between the lines somewhat and get:
Sounds like 4 doors / 5 seats is only part of the equation.
Different from the Z
Not stupid cost of ownership.
Driver's car, not "truck" feel.

Consider also (along the same vein as the P car performance SUV):
Audi SQ5 (it's the Macan's poor cousin).
Alfa Stelvio Ti Sport
Jaguar E-Pace (or F-pace if you want to go larger)
Volvo XC40 or XC60

Or, from out in left field, MINI. Clubman or Countryman in John Cooper Works trim are 4-door and very fun and tossable.

Thanks for the advice. You pretty much hit it on the nail with my selection for a 2nd car.
1. Must be a 4 door that can seat 4
2. I want it to be fun
3. I don't want to have to take a loan out for maintenance.

I know it sounds stupid but I figured since I wasn't going to be dealing with a mid-engine car like a Cayman that the maintenance for most things would be on par with other cars. I guess I am starting to see the error of my ways. Overall I was thinking SUV to have something that is different but yet still would perform and be sportier than most SUVs. I like the additions to the list as far as the E-Pace and the Ti Sport.

I was actually going to add the N to the list but I feel it might be too small for me - 6ft tall - to use a backseat. I'm kinda leaning toward finding a slightly used Golf-R. I mean, I know that car will be pretty roomier yet can carry a lot of stuff if needed and still checks off a lot of the checkboxes I'm looking for. The reliability of Honda and the fun factor of a R has me intrigued as well. Both of them would work as hatches and could hold 4 people while still being a sporty car. But won't lie - that Macan S 'grocery getter' is one sweet ride haha.

MD at one of the hospitals I work for has one. He seemed pretty happy getting out of it the other day. I would also consider:

SQ5, AMG43 GLC, X3 M40i

I personally went with a CX5 turbo (a bit better in most ways than the base Macan), due to maintenance costs being virtually nothing and it only costing $35K new, and while it's fun, it's nowhere in the same league as the other vehicles mentioned, so I doubt it fits your bill, but my point is, when you get into DCT's and "luxury brands", you're trading operating cost for enjoyment, and the question is "how far you wanna go...how far can you justify affording to go?"

Of the 3 above, I might go AMG43 GLC, mainly because the 'Benz dealer is so near vs literally not knowing where our local Porsche dealer resides.

Friend of mine has one and it is a money pit (he also has a 911 and that is the pit of all pits). If you have money to blow away go ahead. If you are a euro guy, you're SOL because every euro out there is a big drain. I would go with a low mileage '16 or '17 QX50. It's got a VQ37 motor, drives like a G37, and looks great lowered on fat tires. Get some sweet sounding catback and a tune and you are gold.

Didn't they make a 5.0 v8 similar model? I remember looking for one, but they are super rare.
