I like to rent Jeeps (Wranglers) when I visit Moab or a similiar off-road destination. Everytime I entertain the the idea of buying a Jeep, I quickly regain my sanity and reject it almost immediately. Now renting one is a whole other story....it just doesn't get much better when you are risking another person's Jeep, freeing you from any inhibitions that may be holding you back from having off-road fun because you are afraid of damaging your own vehicle.

In that regard, I love Jeeps!

BTW, the guy that I rent Jeeps from has recommended to never buy a Jeep

If you can afford to keep it running, go ahead. It's a pay-to-play vehicle.

The wrangler has so little to break, it's an entirely different animal.


I've got probably 100k miles on wranglers (tj+jku) and close to 600k across the Cherokees I've owned. buying the right model and handling preventative maintenance, I've had nothing but great experiences. Certain models are nothing but issues, though.

Literally every single Jeep in the parking lot where I live is leaking some fluid or another. The Grand Cherokee is leaking green. The Cherokee for $1500 for sale is leaking something dark. The other one, I have not walked past enough to determine, lol Mine was leaking red.

The more I read about the wrangler, the more I don't want it. The jku you have, how many miles have you put on it and what problems have you ran into?

My JKU is only at around 45K. Done a good bit of towing across much of the US (with a good bit more weight than recommend ), some offroading through the front range and northeast, and then the general commuting. No issues so far, but it's really still a baby at this point.

The key with Jeep's is to order them without the fancy stuff. Chrysler does a horrible job on those components, and 99/100 problems are with the bells and whistles (My loaded GC was nothing but problems, my Cherokees were problem free).

The big issues I have with the car are the low towing capacity and the aerodynamics. There's nothing like trying to get through Kansas on 70 with gusting winds and that giant Wrangler box...
