So basically, he should have waited until they killed him first before protecting his family? Is that what he should have done? Should he have waited until they beat the crap out of him in front of his wife and kid (which they eventually did) and then taken action once it was too late?

And yes, they DID deserve to be run down and killed. That's what self defense is all about. You do something that threatens my life, I have the right to take yours.
