[OFFICIAL] Discussion for the next new Nissan 400Z Z35?

I like where this thread went. But what about speed? What about the progression of transmission technology that has allowed for automatics to outperform the shift times of manual transmissions

I like where this thread went.

But what about speed? What about the progression of transmission technology that has allowed for automatics to outperform the shift times of manual transmissions being the reason why performance cars are abandoning the manual transmission?

What about most PORSCHES not actually having manuals?

WHAT ABOUT OPINIONS GUYS?! SOMEONE THINK OF THE OPINIONS!

Like my opinion that I'm not buying a Z for $60k no matter what transmission it has. You're welcome for my efforts in bringing the last few pages of discussion back full circle to the topic.

Now we can all opinionate for another few pages without getting in trouble.

Heard the next Z was going back to "three on the tree" to get the manual shifter closer to the steering wheel because safety. Now we can all be friends here.

Cars like the Mustang with 16:1 steering racks just don't have the crisp turn-in like you get from a BRZ, RX-8, Miata, S2000... But those cars don't have the brute force of something like the Z, and especially not the Mustang and Camaro.

The Mustang will go round a racetrack really fast, sure. But driving one, they are heavy, and you can feel it. The steering wheel feels like it belongs on a pirate ship, and as if it's barely even connected to the front wheels on the S197. There is ample dive and squat in the suspension, little feedback from the steering, etc. - though the S550 is greatly improved over the S197 in all of those respects, it's still not as "good" as the Z in those ways.

That is what people are getting at, or at least, that's what I'm getting at... Balance between the actual performance, and the enjoyment of driving it.

If I'm getting paid to win money on a racetrack, I suppose I'm going to drive the fastest damn thing I can afford to drive and I don't care what it feels like, it could be a nightmarish handful that keeps me at my wits' end the entire time, if it's faster, it's faster. But when I drive on the street I'm driving for my own enjoyment and I do not care about 0-60 times or lap times so much as if the car has enough power to "feel fun" to me - and also part of that "feeling fun" is the steering response, flat cornering, predictable braking, etc. That stuff is all way more important to me than the actual lap times turned in on a racetrack by a professional driver who isn't even me, and may not be enjoying it at all.

Now, on the other hand... There's the Miata/BRZ... It's just too slow to be fun IMO. The Z is not too slow to be fun. As I said before, low to mid 13's at over 100 mph in the quarter mile and a top speed (electronically limited) of 155 is slow? Come on, dude.

It could be faster, but it's fast enough to be fun.
Nice post! Addding a CAI, catback and tune and you're at 13 flat or high 12s. And still have the other benefits of lighter weight and better handling. Plus it sounds awesome at that point too, which is a bonus.

GM is getting 30 MPG out of the 460HP Vette. It's not impossible to meet gas mileage and still have the power too.

They are meeting that number with cylinder deactivation at highway speeds. It's a lot less noticeable than in the old 8-6-4 Cadillacs.

I can usually get 30 MPG out of my car @80 mph...not that I care about MPG...

Screw the GT-R - I'm tired of Nissan giving preferential treatment to a halo car. If withholding a DCT is the only thing they think is keeping it somewhat exclusive that means they aren't doing their jobs right. The GT-R, with its AWD and tons of nannies is supposedly a soulless experience anyway. Give me a RWD over that any day. (dons flame suit)

Or how about a 4 banger Porsche?

As someone strongly considering a 981 (flat 6) or 718 (flat 4 turbo) P-car, a 400hp Z would be a strong contender at that price point

I would like this to continue "on topic" with any updates.

I think other members would appreciate the nonsense, and spitball shooting to be done in the off topic section.

Thanks Trips
