I don't see how there wouldn't be with people like this and people changing lanes without seeing a biker. It's definitely a different aspect in driving then what we have in the Chicago area.

We do have our fair share of squids though who weave in and out of traffic.
EDIT: looks like you're talking about the squids XD

Most of the bikers I know don't do that since its legal.

Also its legal because it makes sense, bikes are at a higher risk when sitting in traffic as opposed to cars and it helps with traffic decongestion. Just think about it, that's one less vehicle in front of you.
I don't really think it helps with congestion. They already get free passes in the HOV lane. Lane splitting does nothing but startle drivers and cause potentially more accidents, or damage to cars.

I almost ran one over, because I was startled by this loud bike flying between cars.

Usually I'll hug the line on the drivers side to prevent any of that when I'm in Cali.

It's the most retarded "legal" thing there.

I do not know statistics. In the summer time I hear the fire engine 2-3 times each Saturday and Sunday, usually from bikes. Anybody riding a bike, on a tight mountain road (with cars) for longevity, may need to rethink their exercise area.

I was once a volunteer fire fighter here, and I speak from experience, it is usually a bike falling down hard or tangling with a car.

I will say, I give extra leeway to motorcyclists. I respect their choice to get out of the cage. And yes, some people think motorcyclists are asshats with how they ride (and some are!), but quite often they ride like they do for their own protection. I.e. lane splitting in Cali, faster accel off lights when they're in front, etc. Too many idiot car drivers out there. I'd rather not be one of them, and I give motorcycles plenty of space and courtesy. It's somewhat empathetic, as I'd appreciate the same being given to me when I ride.

Pedestrians and bicyclists I also don't mess with.

For the latter two, I don't want to make a mistake or mistake in judgement or even give the chance of a vehicular manslaughter/assault being slapped on my record. As the driver of the larger, more dangerous vehicle, I do have extra responsibility to not wield it as a weapon, either as a feigned or actual threat. If pedestrians or bicyclists are doing something bad, I'll honk at them, maybe yell out my window what the problem is, and move on.

Lord knows, bicyclists are at least more active and healthier than I. Who am I to criticize?

Oh, and I flash and allow 18-wheelers into lanes on the freeway when they want to, because, well, they're friggin' bigger than me and can kill me if they make a mistake. And it's satisfying to get a thank you flash of the running lights.

I don't think I've ever let an 18-wheeler make the lane change on the highway without first zipping by. From my experience they always overtake each other at what feels like a 1 mph speed differential.

I do however always let someone merge if they have their blinkers on. There aren't too many 370Z's around Knoxville and I'm the only blue one, so I try to be as polite as I can when I'm driving around. Of course, there's always gonna be some pedestrian who tries to wave me down for speeding from the other side of the road even though I'm usually within 5 mph of the limit.

But yes, I am pretty passive, but only because I see little reason to be a **** on the road. I have a sporty car that is rare, usually have my windows open, a vanity plate, etc. I'd hate to piss off the wrong person who has less to lose than I who ends up seeing my car elsewhere and getting revenge. I don't want to be one of those keyed car threads on here.

I pretty much just give the **** treatment to those who do it first.

The usage or lack thereof is a huge pet peeve of mine. You want to merge without signaling? Damn straight I'm going to make it as close a shave as possible, if not even just ignore you. Have your light on and look like you want in but are hesitant or not trying to get as far up as you can before bullying into the lane? I'll let you in/through.

I also try not to judge people on their cars as much as I can. Not everyone has the luxury to have a decent car that is in great shape. I don't want to enburden their life or rub their nose in my car more than I passively do.

I can't stand bicyclists! Always breaking the law and riding side by side, or running lights, and just being reckless with their lives and my car's well being.

I'm not a cyclist and I don't know about PA (I'm going to venture it's the same), but in Hawaii the cyclist has the right to ride in the middle of the lane in the right lane and if making a left turn can ride in the middle of the left lane to make the left turn.

Most people including cyclist, don't realize that this is the law here. Thus I see a lot of cyclist almost get killed for riding far on the right and the car squeezing past them in the same lane pushing them even further to the curb. If the cyclist falls and gets hurt because of this, the driver of the automobile is at fault and can be convicted for manslaughter or worse yet murder 2 if the driver was witnessed harassing the cyclist.

Be patient, use your blinker and wait for a good opportunity to pass. Think of it like following a slow truck, everyone is entitled to the road, not just cars.

Guess that's why we're known as the Aloha State. But in Hawaii, majority of motorist don't respect bicycle riders. Exactly why I don't ride a bike.
