When he pings another car, Your detector may start to pick up that frequency from far, way before you are in the target range. That's the warning you're looking for with a radar. The jammer kicks in when your radar detector failed to pick up the pings on other cars in front of you and now you're the target. Good radars don't miss many pings, though no technology is perfect.
