I think since the VIN is generic to brands and manufacturing location, then specific to the serial number of the car, there won't be like a "check the 23rd character,

I think since the VIN is generic to brands and manufacturing location, then specific to the serial number of the car, there won't be like a "check the 23rd character, if its an A it's a base model if it's an X it's a sports package" situation. And if they did do something like that, I'd assume it was more in reference to a Base v Touring instead.
