I saw an ad on autotrader put up by a dealership. This is what was listed:
2012 white base sport - 6MT - $32,000

Here's what I saw when I got there:
2010 RED base model - 7AT - $34,000!!!!

WTF? same stock number, same vin number, correct dealership. I actually went outside to check the dealership name to make sure I was at the right place...
Dealers are stupid. They don't always know what is actually on the lot. Which is why it's best not to ever listen to them, go and check it for yourself.

Really? Haven't people swapped base brakes for the sport ones on the forum? I mean assuming he's looking at a used car - a new one would never come with the sport brakes if it's not a sport model.

Well yeah, people have done it Aftermarket, of course. I thought we were talking about a New Z, not a Used Z? New from the factory Base models will Not have Sport Brakes.

The Sport Brakes cannot be added to a base. If it has the Sport Brakes, it is a Sport Package.
Well it can. But you need to change to the sport 19" wheels or other aftermarket wheels that can clear the BBK.

OP, only 2 things that can pretty much identifying a sport pkg.

1. The SyncroRev Match button near the shifter if it's a 6 speed manual. I've never seen anyone has added this feature on a base so far.

2. VIN. Because the Vin number is what dealer used to order the parts from Nissan if your car needs to be fixed. It will(should) be able to tell you if it's a base, sport or nismo.

What character would it be? Reference

I believe the VIN is coded like any other manufacturing serial number: It's a blank number linked to a product during manufacturing. Once production is complete, the VIN would be released to a database holding all the information about the car (trim, color, options, etc). Which could be why DE5.0's Maxima would be off if a salesperson or tech went in and checked some option or changed it on when they shouldn't have.

I am not sure which part of the VIN represent what model/package the z is. But I think dealership can pull the vehicle information out of the database by VIN and order the right parts for your car. For example if my exhaust pipe got bent and needed to get replaced, they will order the nismo exhaust not the regular exhaust for me and all they need is the VIN.

If you're buying a new Z from the dealer, if it has sport wheels, it's a sport package. If it doesn't, it is not. It's that simple.

And the VIN does not tell you what model it is. If it did, there would need to be another character added to the VIN aside from the normal number of characters for this...

Base
Base + Sport
Touring
Touring + Sport
Touring + Sport + Nav
Nismo
Nismo + Touring?
And now Nismo + Nav

Maybe if they take the last five, the serial number, and use that only it might be able to bring up more specifics of your car. But that is an individual number, not a special character to identify all cars of that model.

Yeah sorry. I didn't read that post or didn't notice it was you...

As for the VIN, I think yes you can't tell what model your z is just from the VIN itself. What I was trying to say is, the VIN rather is the key to the database that holds the information on your vehicle that will tell you what model the z is.

No worries.

I'm not sure if it does, because I've given dealers the VIN before, and they still ask me "Is it a base? Touring? With Sport package?"

Maybe they're just incompetent.
