Nissan 370Z Forum

Can you guys tell me if your Z does this?

I'm going to pick the car up today/tomorrow and then I'll try swapping wheels. I live 45 miles from dealership, so it's a pain coordinating a ride.

I've had the car in 3 times for this and every time I get the same story. "It's normal". "It's road crown". "It's aligned". When I got the car It did not feel this way. I hit a curb with the back wheel and replaced the back wheel and the lower swing arm, but it has never felt the same since. They even put it on an alignment rack and measured it and it aligns perfectly with the Nissan specs. I have the printout to prove it.
It's pretty much gotta be from this, and most importantly go elsewhere for another opinion. What is this "swing arm" that needed to be replaced? Anything more than minor rim/tire damage sounds a lot worse than just a mild curb hit, sounds like a real incident.

Take it to a reputable independent alignment shop and have them check all 4 wheels closely + thrust angle. Tell them there were repairs in that one corner and you need them to verify nothing's fundamentally wrong there.

How bizarre you mention this. I just started driving mine last week and also noticed the slight left-hand pull. And I haven't hit any curbs... although the potholes are hella bad, but I haven't hit any hard enough to be what I would consider damaging. So I too am very puzzled to why the car is doing this. It was fine last fall, perfect straight tracking with centered steering wheel.

I think your issue might just be with the alignment or road crown. There was this TSB a few years ago. It was a general TSB which may help you and the OP.

So I did a check today and I did not see that my Z was going to the left when I slightly griped the steering wheel. I also tried completely letting go of the steering wheel at a park close by and my car went strait except when I hit the brake pretty hard then it did lean to the left a lot.

Even if the problem is fixed the OP really need to find out the root cause of the problem ....

But my old school mind tells me alignment problems like somes had already said for some type of reason...

Some theories about what route the car should follow when the steering wheel is let go I had never heard before.

I can confirm that my Z has done this since day one. It only happens during breaking. It will pull to the left even with a light force on the steering wheel.

To me it sounds like two separate issues. One is the steering not returning to lock and the other is pulling while braking.

Granted they may be caused by the same issue but they also may be unrelated. Although my Z doesn't pull when braking, in other vehicles I have worked on it can sometimes be due to stuck caliper guides or even stuck caliper pistons, bad proportioning valves, uneven brake wear, bad master cylinder etc.

For your issue with the pulling- when you hit the curb do you know if it bent the strut tower or the area where the strut mount is bolted to? Did they replace the strut & strut mount at all? I'd be curious to know exactly what parts they replaced because if you hit a curb with enough force to bend a lower control arm the chances of many things being slightly out of whack now is pretty high. Sadly in some cases things never can be returned to normal and in a sports car that feels the road like the Z, you notice everything.

They replaced only the control arm and the wheel initially. I was hearing some "extra" road noise after I put some miles on it was determined to be a wheel bearing, so the same side wheel wheel bearing was replaced in the rear as well. During this whole time I had the same issues, so the bearing was not a factor, at least not on it's own.

They did"inspect the suspension components, but I would have to assume that was not very involved, possible just a visual "yep, looks ok". They did loosen the suspension components (I don't know what specifically) and retighten to see if anything was flexing/pushing.

Honestly if they haven't done a full inspection of all of the suspension components including the unibody they are doing you a disservice. I have seen bent struts, damaged springs, strut tower tweaks and all kinds of things that look okay on normal inspection. Too bad you aren't local- i'd help you tear it down and properly look through it all with a fine tooth comb. I'd suggest taking it to a reputable mechanic or even a speed shop that handles race cars, drift cars etc that have an expert in suspension.
