Top ones for the $300-500 price range are going to be:
Beltronics (not sure on their model numbers in this category) Valentine V1 Escort 9500ix However these will all be window mounted units, and therefore spottable if your state doesn't permit radar detectors, like say VA.

Also if you're in a state that has Radar Detector Detector usage, (like VA again), there are only 2 that are invisible to these RDDs, the BEL STi, and the Escort 9500ci (which I have).

the best thing about my Valentine1 is that it picks up almost everything.

Search around the forum:
http://www.the370z.com/nissan-370z-g...has-one-6.html Either the V1 or the Escort looks like the top 2 that I've seen around here.

V1 and Escort are like Cannon and Nikon....can't go wrong either way. Each has their own pros and cons.
I personally love the V1. Knowing the direction it's coming from is huge in my book. Whichever way you go, make sure you get the mirror mount and hardwire kit that plugs into the back of the mirror. Clean look and hard to see from the outside. |

I got a detector when Circuit City went out of business, it works like a charm. Beltronics I believe. My only issue is mounting. I wish it was 100% hidden. It sits on the dash of my Toyota, no idea where to put it in a Z.

I own a V1 as well and I love it, I highly recommend it. It's an older model but works very well. I mounted it next to the gauges on the dash, I can send you pictures if you get interested.

The hardware probably hasn't changed much for the V1, but you might want to look into seeing if you need a firmware update if you haven't... They do update that every now and then.

I'd like to see pics if you can. Wiring is the worst part. Here in CA we can no longer mount anything on the windshield so to secure the radar unit I used one of those 'sticky pads" you see advertised. STAY AWAY! After two summers it was a brown blob of meat on my dash. I used Goop to get it off and it was a real mess. After cleaning the dash and detector I found another way to secure it.
Get yourself those felt feet that you stick on furniture or a TV or anything really that you do not want to leave a mark. I got a bag at Wally World for a few bucks. Now I put six on the bottom of my detector, arranged like a six-pack can view from the top, then I put two more where you'd put your fingers in the six pack. So it looked like a row of three, a row of two, and a row of three, all snugged up together. Now remove the tape on the two rows of three and stick then to the detector. When that is done, take the single row of two in the center, flip them over and put them back snugly in place, and remove the tape so the sticky bits are facing you. Now press the detector onto the dash. Success! When you lift the detector the two feet that are in the center will stay on the dash and are very unobtrusive. The six feet on the detector stay on it. This also raises the detector a fraction of an inch and avoids contact with the vehicle. Less scratches and more cushion. When you place the detector back on the two feet, the corners of the other round feet secure nicely. Only issue is the power cord! And this is on my Toyota. I demand it be a much cleaner install on the Z. |

I'm personally happy with the Passport Escort 8500, I think it is. I don't tend to drive that badly in risky areas, so it's not like it's saved me, but I am an information hoarder.
Definitely search around and get the rearview mirror mount. It doesn't get much cleaner than that and it gets out of the way of any vision areas. |
