I used to get false LASER readings in my SRT with the 8500 when I either punched the throttle or turned my headlights (HIDs) on. Wasn't always, but still scared the **** out of me.
No, your false readings were probably other things causing it.
Many cars use laser tech for cruise control and lane changing which cause a lot of false results.

I hate every one of these cars.

My SRT didn't have cruise control.

Or are you saying the other cars on the road?

Either way, it would do it with no one around. Had to be just getting some sort of reading, or something.

Maybe it was pure shock and awe from the SRT being so fast.

I like it up under the mirror using a blend mount and hardwired. Clean look, cheap, and easy.

If you purchase a decent (Escort, BELtronics STi, V1) unit, it should be shielded against EMI (wiring).

Yes, metallic parts will impede radar functionality as it will reflect the energy instead of passing through.

False Laser reports can come from a few things, any water that might be on the unit (outside the car) can refract light to certain detectable wavelengths.

Your windshield or another cars windows/mirrors/lights can refract/reflect the proper wavelength into the sensor. Pisses me off when it does this.

Very clean install, although if using this for laser detection, since the laser sensor is on the top of the unit, it has an obstructed view of the horizon. Not to mention when cops laze, they are aiming at a large reflective surface at the front of the car (plate, headlights) never at your internal mirror, so that will decrease your chance of picking up the laser signal.

Let's be honest, if you're hit with LASER it doesn't matter unless you've got a shifter. You don't have time to slow down.

True, but with some traffic cameras, depending on where they are actually measuring at, I'll get a hit well before I come into that range to give time to slow down. If it's a cop with a trigger gun, yeah you're toast, but that's the risk you take.

I don't consider it a Laser Detector anymore than it is a Laser Informer.

Even with the shifter, it's tricky. You need to know if laser "jamming" is legal or not in your area. If it is, then you get lased, jam it the first time. That's your freebie, your azz better slow down before he tries again. And you need to have the shifters off so he thinks it was just a gun malfunction or errant reading.

If it's Not legal in your area, he could bust you for the jamming, and forego the speeding charge altogether.

This is the one thing I hate about VA (ban on use). I'm stuck with having to drive around with a tinfoil hat on so I can know when the cops are running detectors.

My 9500ci is not visible when passing by. And even if a cop were to pull me over based on that, I can simply turn it off and he can't say shite.

There was a company who picked up on the police repeater frequencies. many patrol cars will receive the radio signal and then repeat it to the patrolman's handheld radio, This signal is what gets picked up by the detector, and as long as there is radio traffic you have something to pick up.

Here in California it is a little known fact that it is illegal to have a police scanner in the car unless you have a HAM radio license. All you are doing is picking up the existence of this frequency anyway, not the traffic.

I currently have a 9500-lX and am looking to add the V4 laser shifter. The radar detector has saved my butt many times and well deserves the high ratings it gets, but the last two times l did get pegged was with Iaser . That last officer said I should add a shifter, it probably would have saved you....

Default Advice Needed: Best Radar Detector

Guys,

I am looking for the best radar detector available. Have to rush home 350 miles for my mother's 80 birtday on March 17th, and I willl, well, probably break the speed limit.

At any rate "good" radar detectors may now be a myth . . .

Thanks in advance for your input!

Highly recommend you search around the forums. there have been multiple threads on this topic. seems to be a coin toss between the passport 9500XI and V1.. i like the 9500XI myself

I am partial to the 9500IX as well, I love how it locks out signals. It works well.
