ATTENTION!! 2009-2010 owners with steering lock/wont start issues

Understandable. But obviously his steering lock was bad. They should do something about it since it was recall part.

I was just wondering if there is a risk of the stering wheel lock will get engaged while you are driving... I currently have my car at the dealer and they are waiting for my response tomorrow if I'm going to pay 1200.

I haven't seen any reports of an ESCL engaging while the car is in motion. IIRC, the car looks at the ESCL only during starting and will not shut off the car if it moves out of position when running. YMMV

If you pull the fuse (or cut the wire), the motor that locks the steering wheel is disabled and will not turn at all.

If you have the ability/tools, you may be able to disassemble the ESCL and physically set it to the unlocked position. Then just pull the fuse and you are good to go.

See link in my sig for more info.

This just happened to me this afternoon, I called my local dealer and the advisor said my vin didnt show any recalls....
I have an extended warranty but im still not liking where this is going....
Having it towed now.

key light started flashing about 3 days ago, weather has been unusually cold, also had been noticing the car starting very sluggishly the past few days but the volt meter was showing 14.

Default Can I install a new SLU while it is stuck in Lock.

My car has been locked since Sunday, the windows rolled down (never up) every time the doors where opened and it was about to rain, all dealerships where closed so I towed it to a friends residential garage.

I found a link where I can order a new SLU.

Can I install a new one while the existing one is stuck in LOCK?

Does anyone have instructions, how hard is it to install?

Replacing the SLU is a fairly easy job but there's more to it than just replacing the ESCL/SLU. See link in my sig for more info. The FSM has procedures - link in my sig, also.

2011 370Z here (9/2010 build date). 52k miles.

Pulled car into garage on Thursday morning and it has been there since. Trickle charged overnight, power seems good; headlights, rear lights, interior lights, and horn all work as normal. Push to start button reads lock. Purchased 60k mile extended warranty at 47k, so I'm covered.

Have I had this steering lock failure as well?

I want to have the car towed today, but service is not open and the windows are down.

If the battery is good, shouldn't you be able to operate or reset the windows? Others who had an experience SLU issues please chime in.

Had car towed on a flatbed to Autoway Nissan of Clearwater yesterday. Service rep said it would have been ~$1300, but because I have the extended warranty I'm paying a $100 deductible. I also spoke with a young woman who is paying $1075 for the same issue on her 2010 Maxima. Dealer said car would be ready today (Monday).

Why has there not been a class action suit over this yet?

There is a recall on the item. Neither person should have to pay anything. The dealer is a crook. My car was out of warranty. Call Nissan HQ and complain. Loudly. Give them the dealership name and Managers name.

No, even with the fob in the slot beneath the dash, the push-to-start surround still reads "LOCK." Car will not go to ACC, so I cannot operate windows. Dome lights, headlights, tail lights, and brake lights do not require ACC, so they work.

Do not know how to "reset" windows. Moot point at this time since car is going to be picked up when I get out of work here in a few hours.

My service rep (my first experience with him--new dealership) stated to me that there is no factory recall for this item on my vehicle and that it would have cost me approximately $1300.

He said on some "other cars" there IS a recall. Apparently there is no recall on the Maxima as per my friend with the 2010 that has paid $1075.23 for the repair on her vehicle.

I have googled recalls for the SLU for the 370Z, but only found a TSB (technical service bulletin).

I would be glad to join in on any campaign and help out fellow Z owners.
