The car in front of me and the car behind me are totaled. I think the one behind me also got hit by a few other cars as well.

I was in the far right lane of the highway. Volume was high but the speed was up. Was behind a Silverado doing about 70 mph. A work van was next to me on the left. All of a sudden I see the Silverado lock up the front brakes, then make a hard left into the next lane.

Through the tire smoke I see a Prius at the back of a line of traffic stopped dead ahead in my lane. I get hard on the brakes but knowing I'm going to hit him if I stay in my lane I let off the brakes and chance it that the van to my left is paying attention and quickly dart over as far as I can to the left. I was able to get partially over into the left lane and managed not to hit the van and just narrowly squeaked by the Prius at about 40 mph.

The Corolla behind me slammed into the Prius and a couple other cars piled into the Corolla. Airbags off and everything.

Madness.

Also, this is the second close call that has me thinking I need to order PSS for the S2k right away. The last one was a giant metal pipe getting kicked up 20 ft in the air from a big truck ahead of me, then slamming down in my lane. Had to cross two lanes quickly to avoid it and the Hanpoop tires did not want to hold on.

wow! I just pooped a little after reading that!

Glad you are safe, and came out of that situation without any marks... Other than some chocolate skid marks maybe....

This is kind of wild. Here are the remnants of the accident on one of the traffic cams:

Steve. Nice maneuvering and glad you're ok. Sad to say, people just don't understand gaps are your friend. I think hearing the accident with the top down would have been pretty cool myself.

Gaps are your friend. However, whenever I create a safe gap between myself and the car in front of me, a car always wants to come over into my lane and fill it -- at least in the NYC/Long Island area. To fix that, I close the gap, but make sure that I can see through the cars in front of me down the road so that I can see any potential danger and react to it in time.

That's how it is here. If you leave a gap someone will fill it. And of course the person behind you NEVER leaves a gap so even if you can avoid hitting the person in front on your own, you're just going to be shoved into them by the guy behind you.

Its a delicate balance to try and keep people out of your gap, yes. In traffic on my normal commute I will often try to position myself in the left lane behind a smallish vehicle for best maneuvering options (shoulder/grass on the left) and visibility. If traffic is light, then I don't care that much about people getting over in front of me as long as they keep speed. Big pet peeve of mine is idiots cutting people off in the left lane then cruising at 2 mph over the speed limit. In Texas there is signage all over that says "Left Lane for Passing Only", and it's apparently enforceable via ticket. However, I have yet to ever hear of anyone who has gotten one.

In heavier traffic I will often close the gap quickly when I anticipate that someone else is maneuvering or speeding up to sneak in front. Doing this and then immediately backing off to create a gap again seems to be a pretty effective method of letting people know I'm paying attention to traffic, I'm not holding up traffic, and they don't need to be in front of me. I generally want to go faster than them anyway once traffic clears. There are some people that will cut you off anyway, and after that happens, I like to let other tailgaters in front of me because they're more likely than I am to rear end the idiot.

Couldn't afford NTB this time, just needed a quick fix for now. Dealing with all the other mess right now, finances are too tight.

I was paying extra attention to the Silverado since I couldn't see through him. Next time I'm going to leave double the gap.

I am pretty sure what happened is he wasn't paying attention then saw the Prius at the last second. Everyone behind me assumed everything was fine since he was going at a good pace.

It did sound really cool. Heard my tires and then the big crash sound from impact. My hearing was extra sensitive because I was trying to listen to see which side of the car I was going to rip off... left or right.

good luck today, mr.onzedge! selling a 6 digit software is tough business (not that i am any expert in software).

i knew this was going to be some sort of PSS commercial/advertising campaigne... just kidding! glad you made it okay! i had a similar situation back 20yrs+ ago when i was driving a pos civic-hb with no-season tires i saw a cavalier or something PARKED in the middle of the fast lane. we were all going pretty fast 75mph-ish and a trunk infront of me (blocking my view) suddenly swerved out of the lane to avoid hitting the parked cavalier giving me less than 0.5 sec to react.

with pos all seasons on a stock pos civic with 90K miles, i knew the only option. i went into the grass to avoid hahaha. i thought my pos car would fall apart into pieces with tires blown and all. cars behind me also did the same and luckily noone hit, no blown tires. we all got out of our cars, and did the wtf dance. then hopped back into our cars and drove off.

Thanks, Mr. Kenchan. This one will be 7 figures over a year. No pressure. Geesh... These guys are showing up in 1 1/2 hours and then it's all on me. I need a nap or a vacation or something. I may as well burn off my nervous energy on the forum.
