Default Anyone cross-shopped or compared a Mitsubishi EVO X MR?

I'm close to pulling the trigger on a purchase. At the last minute, now, my nearest Mitsubishi dealer comes up with an OPENING offer of $9,000 off of list on a new 2008 Mitsubishi EVO X MR. (There are no '09s.)

Performance is very, very close between the EVO and the 370Z SP. At this price, the 370Z Touring SP would cost a couple thousand more. Besides the increased cargo and passenger capacity of the EVO, what's better or worse about each of the two cars? Has anyone compared / owned / tested both?

Or, in the alternative . . . does anyone know of good comparison tests or individual tests I could find online?

I came from two sti's which I bought over both the evo 8 and the 9. When it came time I didnt even consider the X. Its a nice car and all, but its awd, 2L and a 4 banger... Its a solid car...but the Z is going to be a lot more fun and feels waaaaaay more grown up...

I agree with the last statement but not necessarily the first.

The Z will come across as much more, let's say, mature vehicle. With outlandish type handling and a solid sports car feel. The X doesn't come with the same feel, or the same sort of Sports car maturity, alas it is a four door. However it does come with a laundry list of very cool items.

Don't knock the, 2 litre - 4 banger, as you called it, engine on the X, the VW GTI, MazadaSpeed 3 are hugely advanced engines.

So, after all that. Take them for a test drive and let us know what U think.

I have and I liked both. But I so much love the Porsche Cayman S, I just can't afford it, so this was the next best fit and what a fit it has become ..... I love it.

Good luck.....

I was in the same boat. I was either going to get an Evo X or 370Z. I opted for the Z for some of the reasons mentioned.....more of a 'sports car' and more 'mature'.

both are really great cars. As much as I love the evo X and sti, it came down to the look and feel of the cars. My previous car was a boosted 04 civic hatchback. I hated all the negative attention from rice rockets I would get when I would drive around. I guess I was looking for a more "mature" car as everyone else posted.

So . . . it's a subjective choice. I reckon that's not surprising since, at this end of the market, most of it is a matter of taste.

I tend to be a numbers guy, too, so I couldn't help but notice that the Z gets 20% better fuel mileage.

Being a sportbike guy, though -- with virtually unlimited visibility around me -- I'm having trouble accepting the Z's lack of visibility anywhere behind the driver's seat. (I guess, so long as you drive faster than everybody else, it won't matter, eh?)

If you need practicality, the Evo wins hands down, really. But, if you want a mature sports car, I would opt for the 370 any day. And even then, if I were shopping for an Evo, it certainly would be an IX, over the X...

Funny how you guys mention the Z has a more mature car because me and my younger stepbrother was in the market for a sportscar. Needless to say I ended up choosing the Z and he went with the EVO X MR. I've driven his EVO couple of times and I'm glad I didn't go with the EVO. Just doesn't feel like a DD...

Evos final drive ratio.....you're revving so high at fwy speeds i found that very annoying. I own an s2k so my car revs even higher but for a car with so much torque off the line as the evo, it's simply not necessary. You're just sipping on gas for no reason. They need a overdrive 6th gear. Even with high revving on the fwy, my s gets 28-29 mpg as long as i don't gun it. Evo i found nearly impossible to achieve. Evo is quite a bit heavier too and for what? The car simply isnt fast at all in stock trim. It has no turbo lag but the steam dies off so fast when you reach 5k rpms. Handling is great just as the Z, mmmm what else can i say......oh the PLASTIC pedals have broken in the past. Why would you make such a crucial component in plastic? and even after that, why is the car so damn heavy? quality sure as hell doesnt feel like it should be that heavy. Sorry about the rant im just very disappointed with the X. I would take previous MY if i were going with the evo.

While I have not considered the evo for me, my buddy just purchased an evo x and he loves it. Performance wise stock, both cars are putting up virtually the same numbers. Like said in the previous posts, the evo with four doors and a back seat, is a lot more practical and if you want more room get the evo. The z is a two door sports car with no back seat. I am getting the 370 just because I want the performance and I dont want a four door car, but I would not knock the evo at all. It has great performance stock, and since it already comes w/ a turbo off the line, after bolt-on mods, they are fairly easy to mod with a bigger turbo and put out crazy hp. I would definitely test drive both before you pull the trigger on either one. Thats just my two cents...

Yeah, if you call the EVO slow, you're calling the 370Z slow. They offer the same performance numbers. It's a wash.

Why is the EVO heavier? It's simple: AWD.

Neither franchise owns the exclusive on stupid design and (to be honest) product defects. They've both gottem'. Read the forums.

Let's summarize what we've got to this point (beyond matters of taste):

- Z wins on fuel economy by a lot.
- Z wins on ultimate dry road lateral grip.
- Z wins on list price.
- Z wins on access to dealers (around here, at least)
- EVO wins on seating & luggage space.
- EVO wins on sight lines out the back and sides.
- EVO wins on wet / gravel / snow lateral grip.
- EVO wins on "name brand" components
- Both are very cool cars.

Anything (beyond matters of taste) that I'm missing?

Well, TTP claims to have gotten 90HP/90LB out of the EvoX with just their Zchip and an MBC.

Having come from an STI and a Evo I can say that in the case of the Evo it an amazing machine as long as you can keep it in the power band. Once that turbo falls out of peak RPM it tends to be pretty sluggish and that is with a Evo IX the EVO X is a much larger/heavier car so that could only magnify the problem.

The Z however is going to be a totally different kinda of animal it not going to have that ON/OFF power it'll come on and pull all the way through to redline where it makes its peak power.
