Haven't driven the Z on ice or snow yet, but I did get these things from Target.

How do they work and what are they called?

I dont know what they are called, but you essentially put them in front of your rear tires. They fold up into a pretty small item. There are grooves for your tires to grip and the bottom is the same pattern, just reversed. I have not tried them on ice or snow, but I got them from the automotive/winter section in Target. Maybe next to hand warmers? I forget..

Those are cool. Might get a set to keep in the car. Seems like somebody always needs 'em. Whole lot better than cardboard.

Oh yeah. And snow tires FTW.

Those are nice. I need to go pick some up.

Snow tires definitely deserve a FTW. But you still want to carry some extra weight in the hatch and some traction-aid if you do get stuck. I have Dunlop Wintersport M3s on the 5.0 and had some issues with uphill climbs in around 4-5" of heavy wet snow. I could have used an extra 200lbs over the rear tires for sure.
