i read a report from japan where the parents accidentally killed their baby from their suv with stiff suspension. trauma to the brain.
What?

The Evo X isn't that stiff at all. I test drove both when I originally bought the Z and unless your roads are made out of cobblestone and potholes I seriously doubt you would notice a difference.

I'm really not sure why there is so much hate for the X here.

did you guys see the nissan commercial where the wife tells the husband that she is pregnant and the guy walks out to the driveway and pulls on the hood of his 370z and it morphs into a maxima? i thought the effect was so cool

I like the Evo X a whole lot. You aren't really losing much, honestly.

The Evo is a solid car -- but it is still a Lancer.

Given that oil is over $100 a barrel again, I'm for the "keep the Z get a cheap reliable DD" option. Get a used Honda, Mazda, Toyota, etc. for your DD/kid related travels. You'll be saving on gas vs. getting an EVO (a Civic or Mazda 3 would get you DOUBLE the gas mileage of an EVO).

Thanks for the advice so far guys. And just to clarify, the fact that we are about to start a family isn't the only reason for me thinking about this. The EVO would seem to be at least semi-usable during the winter, whereas the Z is almost impossible to get around in.

If you get snow tires, you will be okay

If you were up here, I'd say no. But Philly gets only about 18" of snow per year on average. Get some of the Hankook snows - good value and highly rated.
