Don't try to surprise him, just ask him what he wants for his car. I hate it when my girlfriend tries to "surprise" me with a gift because she likes "surprise" but I flat out tell her EXACTLY what I want. Then she gets mad at me because what she got me was not what I wanted.

yeah first thing is what does he have done?

Ask him to make a wish list also

then pick from there.
