You're right about the US requirements dictating the viability of sports cars for Japan, Inc. Unfortunately, the future for sports cars isn't all that brilliant now in the U.S. The 35.5 mpg CAFE requirements are going to fundamentally change the automotive mix in the states. Enjoy your Z now, while you can still buy one!
The one thing people are ignoring with the new CAFE standards is that it is an average based on sales. So Nissan can offload hundreds of thousands of hybrids/sentras/etc. and then can allow the Z or GT-R to survive with lower MPG ratings.

That's assuming we can get anyone to buy all these small sh*tboxes in sufficient number. We all have to get all our friends to buy little efficient happy smiley greenie cars, so we can get our nasty fun GT-R's please!

If they kill it, I'll be happy to say I owned a 370... And go back to driving Mustangs

+1 on the RX-7. I know Mazda is working on the new 1.6L direct injection rotary but it''s probably a few years away yet. Unfortunately "affordable" sports cars seem to be a dying breed and the current economy seems to be speeding that up. I think what we will start to see in the future is smaller displacement engines (maybe with turbos) in much lighter cars. Think Lotus. I don't think the HP wars can go on forever. If things keep up the way they are we'll be looking at the Mustang, Challenger and Camaro with something like 10.0L engines and 800 hp in about 15 years. Eventually the focus with these cars will have to shift to other aspects besides power.

Obviously the new rotary will still likely have much less power than cars such as the Z, but their stated goal has been to use this engine in a sub 3000lb car. I'd guess somewhere in the neighborhood of 260-280hp is what this engine will end up with along with much improved fuel economy. I think they are really going after the essence of what a hardcore sports car is supposed to be, much like the old rx-7s. And I think smaller, lighter, and less powerful is what the future of sports cars holds. Nissan definitely did a good thing by making the 370 slightly smaller and it will be interesting to see how that FT-86 turns out.

I also agree with a previous poster who said the new 5.0 Mustang next year could be the pinnacle of the hardcore muscle cars. It will definitely be hard to top that at an affordable price and I'll call it now that the new Mustang will own the Challenger and Camaro SS in every way. Hell, if you compare the current V-8 Mustang with the other 2 it comes very close in every performance comparison on the track...and that is with 100 less hp. With another 100hp that Mustang will be a complete monster.

this brings up an interesting discussion i had over the weekend with some friends. the 350z was constantly changing. although it remained virtually the same between 03 and 04, in 05 they introduced then optional "revup" 300hp engine (up from the standard DE's 287hp iirc) then in 07 they made every car come with the "HR" VQ which produced 306 hp. is the 370 going to be the same? obviously the original release with 332 hp then the follow up of the 350hp version in the nismo is one thing but it's not the standard unit in the base model like it was in the 07's (everything from the base model to the nismo got it). will nissan introduce a direct injection VQ into the 370 or wait till the next body style? a direct injection VQ could easily make upwards of 375hp or more putting it more in direct competition with the camaro and mustang who have just barely edged over the 400hp mark (granted with a LOT more weight than a Z). then again, this would edge the Z34 closer to the performance of the GTR which it needs to keep itself seperated from. it will be interesting to see how the 370 evolves over the course of it's life as a production vehicle. also i don't see the Z going down in displacement since every version of the Z has had a larger displacement compared to it's predecessor but i could see an only slight bump (maybe 3.8 or 3.9L) with a light presssure TT setup with direct injection as a "Z35" engine setup, at least optionally, as gov't CAFE standards get more and more strict while the EPA dictates car get closer and closer to zero emissions... yay government for tinkering with business in our "free market" *rolls eyes*

p.s. Z's have always been a good marketable money-maker for nissan, this whole "not profitable" notion seems a little strange to me. i could see them not making an R36 due to being "not profitable" since it's such a low production (and currently low selling) vehicle but the Z should be safe in it's continuation into the future. Mr. K wouldn't have it any other way...
