Default Shifting Into First Not Possible...

Today I tried to down-shift from 2nd to first gear and it just wouldn't go. My RPM on 2nd was at about 3k. Then I pushed really hard and it went into first. But I had to push really hard. I don't think that is normal.

I mean for a 40k car, shouldn't it have a smooth shift? Has anyone else have this experience? It is really frustrating me.

I am going to take it to the dealer very soon. I just hit 1k, so I need my first oil change anyway.

Why would you downshift from second if you're still rolling? There's no point.

How is the transmission otherwise?

nothing to take to the dealer about, you basically have to double clutch for the 1st to engage if the car's moving. The syncro just isn't able to mesh for that gear if the speeds are too different, a lot of us have noticed this characteristic.

Just slot it into 2nd for the corner...

My wrx was like that too so no suprise for me driving the Z. You just have to double clutch if you want to get it in 1st while still moving. But like someone else mentioned, I'll usually just leave it in 2nd while rolling slow.

After reading a lot about MT problems, I seriously believe it is people who don't know how to drive a manual and are learning on this Zed. As a result this MT is being abused by people who do not know how to drive a manual.
Really you would only put it in first if you were crawling at say, 2 to 4 mph, for everything else just leave it in second, I am assuming traffic conditions.

why the hell would you downshift to first exactly? if you're going to do that, just pop it into neutral..

Default highly recommended - don't downshift to 1st

You would not need to downshift to 1st gear, as 2nd gear is the most suffice for maximum downshift. You're just putting unnecessary shock to the transmission if you downshift to 1st, so don't do it.

Yes you can shift to first gear. Take a look at this video:

Start watching from 3:47 if you don't want to watch the whole video. Tiff Needell will shift from 2nd to 1st.

I personally avoid this with the Z because there no need for it. I do it if I am slowing down to like 3 -5 MPH (or if I need rapid acceleration).

Thanks for the replies.

For those of you who chose to attack me, can you explain to me why I would NOT be able to down shift into first? What is the mechanical limitation?

I have often noticed that it is hard to shift into first or second, I think it is worthwhile to understand why.

Have you guys actually tried to down-shift from 2nd to 1st? Is it very hard to do? Or impossible?

Dear AK370Z,

Have you ever down-shifted into first yourself? Could you do it? Did you use a lot of force to shift?
