The gas gauge is on the side of where the tank is, or else it's labeled to help you is how I always knew it to be.

So if your gauge was on the left, and no arrows or helpers, your tank should be as well..

That's not the case in my MB CLS55, the gauge is on the left side, tank is on the right, and I don't have any arrows.

I'm not sure that's true. The main Wiki article for this sort of thing states

"today about 66% of the world's people live in right-hand traffic countries and 34% in left-hand traffic countries."

Yep... our CLK 500 has the fuel gauge on the left and gas door on the right.

your hummer probably has a picture of a gas pump, like my tahoe. Look at what side of that pump the hose is on in the diagram.

and regardless of that, if they were all on the same side, it would screw up the flow at the gas stations. I jsut hate that the tahoe has it on one side and the Z on the other, because when its on the trailer on the way to the track, I have to reposition to fill both. I just always remember, our American cars are on the drivers side, foreign ones on the passenger side.

I'm pretty sure my parent's beater buick has a picture of the pump but the fuel door is NOT on the side that the picture indicates.

the best part is your girlfriend knew.. if i were to tell my GF what side the gas tank was on 2mins before she pulled up to a gass station she would still forget

no not really, my Toyota Celica has the fill on the left and as far as i remember, it was the same for both US and Japan spec models.
