As a road cyclist I can confirm, if there's any car in front of me willing to maintain a steady 30-35mph, it's amazing how much reduced your effort gets and how much easier it is to hold that speed. Without a car in front, you could sustain such speed maybe for max half a minute.

Isn't the point of cycling to exert effort?

True

but you're still exerting effort, high speed (in cyclist terms) riding is also needed, to train at high cadence and different speed dynamics. It's never easier, you only get faster
