The prior owner may have removed it and installed an oil cooler only to remove it before selling/trading it in. Check for plugged coolant hoses or see if he/they joined

Check for plugged coolant hoses or see if he/they joined the 2 coolant hoses. That would probably explain why you don't have one IF it's not vin related.
