Reading the DIY thread we are going to have to REBAKE each set of headlights once the paint is dry and then silicone seal them.

eastwest2300 08-26-2012 04:38 PM

Yup... its pretty easy, and straight forward.

The rebaking is for if you're reusing the factory sealant.

So what day is this going on in Sept? I'll be out of town again starting the 20th that month.

Masa 08-26-2012 08:15 PM

And no I won't be doing my lights. I'll be trollin' IRL like a BAWS.

dmhenderson 08-26-2012 08:18 PM

I'd rather remove the factory sealant and re-seal them to be 100% sure

I was looking at Lowes & Home Depot online while I was at work, and Im really not sure. Im gonna go into lowes and talk to somebody.

b1adesofcha0s 08-28-2012 02:53 PM

I saw rubber butyl tape in the online sites, but no tubes of sealant.

eastwest2300 08-28-2012 03:00 PM

Yeah, thats what i found too. so Im not sure what to do.

haha, you know what Im thinking? Im thinking everyone should bring their own tube... yuuuup! I'll go find it, then everyone goes to buy it. hehe

falconfixer 08-28-2012 06:32 PM

Did any of you guys see this? OCI Butyl Rubber Glue - Accessories from The Retrofit Source Inc

I know it's not the tubes of sealant but like you guys, I've been looking for a little bit tonight to help out and haven't come across anything in a tube. Most other forums refer to this tape stuff and talk good things about it. Not endorsing this product in any way so take it at face value.

this is what i used, it is extremly sticky so becareful handling this.
also got this fom local napa

b1adesofcha0s 08-28-2012 07:26 PM

I think that might be what the rubber butyl "tape" is.

b1adesofcha0s 08-28-2012 08:20 PM

Another interesting note from that page is that it mentions the original sealant should work fine.

Rain, do you remember what color the sealant was when you got it? If it was black, did it make a difference in the look of the headlights around where they are sealed? I don't want to have the black sealant showing through the clear headlight lens if it makes the headlights look weird. Don't have a black car so it would be noticeable for me too.

falconfixer 08-28-2012 08:26 PM

blades, that was my thought process when I mentioned a clear alternative but after looking for the stuff it doesn't seem we have a wide selection of product.

Yes and this is why I want to try re-using the OEM sealant for my own lights. If there's condensation in it, then I'll just have to spend another day taking them apart and putting them back together with some new sealant.

Masa 08-28-2012 08:36 PM

Just be careful and patient when you pry the headlights the first time. When I did this mod back on my GTI it was really simple and I ended up reusing the sealant as well. When you rebake the lights to soften up the factory sealant it should help dry up anything left over the hair dryer didn't catch.

the color was black, and i did scrape off all the original sealant before applying the butyl. also if you somehow and i know you will get the butyl sticks onto headlight, its going to be PAIN IN THE *** to remove them. so be very cautious.
i think the 1 roll of those butyl tape is enough to do 2-3 pair of headlights. dont overuse them because cleaning up the mess takes longer than modifying the headlight. LOL

eastwest2300 08-28-2012 09:27 PM

Good stuff right here guys, thanks.. I'll be getting some of this. thanks for posting!

Sales@AAMComp 08-30-2012 10:44 AM

bump!

b1adesofcha0s 08-30-2012 10:53 AM

Do we have everything ready to go for this? I just need to get the paint which is literally just across the street from me at Walmart. I'll probably grab that in the week before we do it.

eastwest2300 08-30-2012 11:15 AM

We DO NOT have the sealant... but we DO have 2 weeks to figure it out!

You need to figure it out soon then, because if you end up having to order it online you might not get it in time. I'm still planning on re-using the factory sealant so it's not as big of a deal to me.

eastwest2300 08-30-2012 12:17 PM

OK, so here's the deal, since everyone has the option to reuse the factory sealant, or buy new sealant. That option is up to you, if you want to use new sealant, you buy it and bring it..
