Assuming you're going to hit 500, 516 is 3.2% off. That's well within the range of dyno variance.

Don't worry about the number (HP or TQ ) Sam told me when the engine finds the tune it likes the numbers will be there,

Your worrying about stuff that won't happen.

Just dial in the tune play around with the a/f (mine likes it rich on the top end) and your tuner will see the sweet spot.

This is a major concern. I don't have another 3k to blow on piston rings and a motor teardown right now ;)

Anyone?

I would guess it depends on how you drive it after it has attained 500+ HP ... drive it like you stole it all the time or take it to the track every other weekend then I don't think it will last as long. Probably not going to blow up, but it definitely will not live as long a life as a NA motor.

dmhenderson 06-25-2013 12:56 PM

Rare track (Drag strip) use and just conventional driving / some "spirited driving" otherwise.

Chuck33079 06-25-2013 12:58 PM

If the tune is conservative and spot on, and you maintain the car appropriately, I wouldn't expect you to have any issues. I was told by the shop that installed my TT kit that as long as I stopped at 500 whp, it would last a long time.

Hey man I wasn't trying to scare or discourage you about the build.. I just meant as far as long term reliability goes, its a risk you have to be willing to take. I mean, that comes with the territory when you are going to be making almost 50% more power compared to stock. I guess thats why a good rule of thumb when going boost is to have an emergency fund set aside just in case. Know what I mean?

Chuck33079 06-25-2013 01:07 PM

If you boost a car that left the factory as NA without an "emergency motor fund" or daily driver you can use while you fix the Z, you're doing it wrong.

dmhenderson 06-25-2013 01:29 PM

I should be ok so long as it doesn't happen like 2000 miles after the SC goes in.
(my "emergency fund" was swallowed whole by this build)

theDreamer 06-25-2013 01:30 PM

You should be fine, just keep up with maintenance and monitor the car regularly.
Not sure I have the highest, but one of the longest running boosted cars with over 40k miles with boost.

That was you? Hah. Yeah just a concern. I worry a lot.

Question: How badly do I need an AFR gauge? I picked up boost/vac & oil temp but the wideband AFR sensor module is like another $150 plus it has a sensor bung you have to weld into your freaking exhaust.

I would never drive an FI car without one.

Chuck33079 06-26-2013 12:52 PM

I wouldn't run an aftermarket fi kit without one. How else would you know if you're running too rich or too lean?

You really need to get one when I tune my car I use the gauge not Uprev plus the wide bands in our cars are not the most accurate as it goes up in RPM it is more off, mine are off 1full point at redline.

dmhenderson 06-26-2013 01:25 PM

Ok sold.

Blow it up and start over. After talking to some folks, I'm going to return the PLX sensors I bought and look into replacing the stock clock and voltage gauges with boost and AFR.

Quote requests out to multiple vendors for Innovate/Defi gauges and associated sensors.

The fun never ends.

theDreamer 06-26-2013 03:41 PM

If you replace one of those gauges you have to replace all 3, just a heads up.

Why? Is there a wiring harness issue?

theDreamer 06-26-2013 04:17 PM

There is a single board behind that controls all 3, trying to find the picture of it but basically it was if one goes they all go with how it was designed (bad idea by Nissan).

dmhenderson 06-26-2013 04:18 PM

asdahsdjasdahsfbhasdfahsda

This is like pulling teeth.

dmhenderson 06-26-2013 04:18 PM

Ahaha Defi doesn't make a wideband AFR gauge either (wtf). Innovate or Prosport I guess.

dmhenderson 06-26-2013 04:22 PM

Revised plan: Innovate gauges for oil temp, AFR and boost replace OEM gauges. No Defi. No multigauge. Nix the clock and voltage gauges.

Had to choose between oil pressure and oil temp and I'm gonna go with temp - thought being if I have a massive oil pressure drop it should be pretty obvious pretty quickly.

theDreamer 06-26-2013 04:22 PM

Yeah, that is one reason I am not liking Defi is because I cannot get a wideband AFR gauge.
I want to do all 3 and put in an oil temp, AFR and fuel pressure but defi does not do AFR.

dmhenderson 06-26-2013 04:24 PM

Well hell, Innovate gauges are cheaper and come in red/orange so that'll have to do.

Anyone know anything about ProSport gauges? They were the other option someone threw out.

theDreamer 06-26-2013 04:25 PM

A few on the forum have ran them, search triple gauge and a few threads pop up.
Curious to see how the Innovate gauges look, link which ones you are thinking of going with.

dmhenderson 06-26-2013 04:29 PM

This guy in orange/red for starters:

DB Gauges: Air Fuel Ratio Guage

Not interested in ProSport after reading a couple horror stories.

Chuck33079 06-26-2013 06:41 PM

Good call on the Prosport stuff. I've got the Innovate wb, and it works fine. Apparently the calibration procedure can be a pain in the *** depending on where the O2 sensor is located, but it works well. Don't let the pic on the website fool you though, it's not that bright. My only complaint with it is that I'd like it brighter during the day, but it's not adjustable.

dmhenderson 06-26-2013 06:49 PM

Doesn't the sun shroud over the OEM cluster shield enough to see?

Looks like I'm going to go:

Defi Boost and Oil Temp
Innovate WB AFR

Please tell me I'm not going to need another sensor module for the oil temp gauge?

Chuck33079 06-26-2013 06:50 PM

Mine's on the A pillar, so I couldn't tell you. I'd assume it would. Just an FYI that it washes out some in direct sunlight.

dmhenderson 06-26-2013 06:52 PM

Mine will all be put in the stock gauge cluster. Dropping voltage and the ~clock~ and adding the aftermarket gauges.

Chuck33079 06-26-2013 06:56 PM

Eventually I'll replace the stock triple gauge with oil temp, oil pressure and EGT, but that's way down the line. I like the A pillar for boost and AFR since it's in the line of sight. Personal preference there. If my wallet was bottomless, it would be a HKS CAMP with all the sensors, but that's just hilariously expensive.

dmhenderson 06-26-2013 06:58 PM

Yeah I'm gonna go oil temp, AFR, boost in the stock gauge cluster. Oil pressure is a failsafe but as someone else put it, "You're probably going to notice if you blow a hose and spray oil all over the engine block".

dmhenderson 06-26-2013 07:00 PM

Also there are less insane "all in one" digital supergauge solutions that aren't HKS. The guys at Doran recommended one that started at (laffo) $1200. I can dig for it if you want.

Chuck33079 06-26-2013 07:01 PM

If I had to pick three, it would be the ones you listed.

I'll take a look at it. That's still a little high for me, but I've spent more on dumber ****.

dmhenderson 06-26-2013 07:11 PM

These guys:

AiM Sports - The World Leader in Data Acquisition

Retardedly expensive but very cool. I'd remove the center cubby and mount that bitch there. Haha they sell models that run up into the $4k range. Whee.

It even has a lap timer. The nicer ones show you gear optimization and a bunch of other number crunching for car nerds.

Chuck33079 06-26-2013 07:13 PM

I'm saving something like that for the track car. For the Z, I want it to use the nav screen, or I'll just replace the 3 gauges on the dash and save a fortune.

dmhenderson 06-26-2013 07:33 PM

I just want the clean, OEM look so stock gauge cluster it is.

Baer383 06-26-2013 08:19 PM

Like mine!!!!!
