Part it out???

dmhenderson 02-23-2015 04:56 PM

Looking at picking up a R35 this fall after show season.
This car is a massive pain in the butt.

(I love it to pieces but still)

dmhenderson 02-23-2015 05:01 PM

I'm supposed to be working on speaker notes for a presentation I put together and instead I've been having fun tracing the evolution of this car from when I picked it up 3 years ago. Pretty ridiculous considering where I started.

I only sorta regret half of it.

I'll still be doing the show thing this Spring and Summer so if you want to check the car out, I'll be around.

Read what we had to do carefully and save yourself a headache. The ethanol conversion was horrible and probably not worth it in the long run.

Go ahead and pick up the fuel return kit from CJM now because the setup won't work without it. Just to give you an idea, I have to fill up twice a week driving around on this stuff, it's more expensive than premium (right now) and burns 3x as fast. Oh and I should also mention my "commute" is less than a quarter mile from home. I'm sure you know most of this - just want you to be aware of what you're getting yourself into.

Also did you ever swap out your BPV?

*Edit: For FI and Ethanol you need the stage 2 return kit FYI.

Sorry, not trying to make you paranoid, the fluid in the reservoir all dumped out (still investigating) and was going down the freeway so the SC was spinning with no fluid. SC overheated and locked up, if the fluid had not leaked the kit was still going on strong.

I have spoken with Charles at CJM and we are working on the parts to use for the fuel upgrade, also trying to deal with GTM on getting key parts I need from them if that is even possible.

Woah, e85 is more than premium for you guys? It was high for a bit at the start of the year here but it has dropped down below regular fuel (I think I last saw at $1.80-$1.90). Also working on a DD as my wife & I are expecting our first child so need a car with a back seat area to haul the little one around.

I never did change the BPV, might be something I need to do also while doing all the upgrades.

dmhenderson 02-24-2015 09:11 AM

If you figure out root cause on why the SC fluid reservoir dumped, please let me know. That freaks me out.

Just tell Charles you want the same setup I have (he'll remember).

I definitely plan on coming to the Saturday morning meets when the weather breaks. Id really like to see your car in person at least one more time. Are you going to style and performance this year? Its in july this year i think instead of may like last year.

dmhenderson 02-24-2015 10:17 AM

Yes, I will be at both the I&K nationals and P&S.

well if P&S is moved then you should be able to make it to zdayz :stirthepot:

dmhenderson 02-24-2015 10:22 AM

Not putting 1400 miles on the car for that

why not? zdayz is so much better than the ricer meet at Carlisle lol

one last hoorah in the Z before selling it I would have to say ZdayZ should be on it's bucket list. :tiphat:

dmhenderson 02-24-2015 10:43 AM

1400 miles is a lot? Maybe. I'll think about it.

i'm just saying while you still have the Z (although GT-R's are more than welcome at zdayz) you should attend once. it's amazing to see the amount of Z and G cars plus the people make it unlike no other show.

worst case you could trailer the Z :stirthepot:

nomodsjk 02-24-2015 12:35 PM

Yeah what he said....:rofl2:

I don't have a tow vehicle and renting one is prohibitively expensive (looked into it last year). Thing is, it's not going to win any awards. It's definitely weird (ethanol converted supercharger) but isn't the loudest and won't beat out the TTs for fastest - although I could give them a run for their money off the line assuming I don't crash :)

Also not dropped or stanced for the ~lowlife~ kiddies out there. Just doesn't fit into that sort of car show.

zdayz isn't a kiddie show where stanced garbage wins. that's Carlisle just there's not many 370s there since most kids there cant afford them. well maybe now that they are going dirt cheap lol

there's some nasty cars that show up. there's a massive car show that I think you would place in easily.

just Z's as far as the eye can see lol

After all this greatness:confused:

I will miss it but it has to end at some point. I really don't even get to drive it that often. The R35 is my dream car anyway and would be much less hassle.

Great thread , was very interesting and informative to read. Also , interesting reading about the want/need for more power leads to an almost regrettable feeling in the end. I'm in the 2nd month of my SC build, am happy with the power, have almost no issues other than the Turbosmart BOV sounds like crap. Going to order that Synapse valve today!!
I think I'd like to run a fan on my oil cooler, so, cooling is where I'd like to focus upgrades on.
Thanks for the good read sir!!

dmhenderson 04-21-2015 01:08 PM

Final update: Sandwich plate oil adapter was leaking (again) and also caught a blown clamp causing SC fluid to leak. See??? My paranoia was justified.

New clutch is in

The good:
-I can drop in really hard in first and the clutch doesn't even bat an eye. It just bucks and launches. Pretty awesome.
-Friction point is very close to the floor now which makes quick shifting much easier
-Clutch grabs instantly. No hesitation and that "floaty" feeling in high 2nd is gone.

The bad:
-Holy crap this thing is a leg workout. My left leg is going to be enormous.
-I get the feeling I could probably snap my driveshaft in two if I **** around too much

Getting My Stage 3 daily clutch & F. Wheel Installed Tmrw.!

RBfastback 09-24-2015 10:26 AM

what head unit from pioneer is that and how did u get it to display "nismo"

dmhenderson 10-21-2015 01:59 PM

Uh It's an AVIC-Z140BH if I remember right. I have no idea how I pulled that from memory. It has a SD card slot and you can customize the launch screen (among other things). It's almost 3 years old now so I'm sure they have something snazzier out there.

Sorry for the late response.

Just to close the loop:

* The legend of the Z lives on in Ohio. The new owner made the front page of his local paper literally the first week he had it. Better press than I ever got:
