Megan370z 07-21-2012 10:03 PM

another late update !

Last weekend was the Event #3 of CSCS.ca at Mosport DDT which I had to attend !
I was on vacation the week prior so I had some time to work on the car and try to prep it as much as I could to be ready at a track I only went twice in 4 years !!!

The day was calling for some rain, starting late in the after-noon.

Me and an 350z fellow booked an hotel room because we didnt want to bothered sleeping in a tent in case it would be rainning during the night.
http://www.the370z.com/members/megan...90139475-n.jpg

Once we got on the spot at the track, we quickly found our spot for the day. We started to do our normal routine !

As soon as the tent was up, everything layout inside. I jumped on the car to install those nice expensive race pads and a barely new set of Toyo RA-1.
My Time Attack class call for 50+ threadwear .

http://www.the370z.com/members/megan...ure52922-a.jpg

I had time to finish some setup on the car to not being late at the driver meeting. We then went on the track 20mins later.
Before our session, it was the Drift pratice which always put a lot of dirt on the track . Anyway I was one of the first car to be on the track at our first lapping session.

We had to be very carefull with all that sand and dirt on the track !! it was a little bit scary . I had my friend to follow me, helping him seeing the line and braking point !

Going Counter-Clock wise . *CCW*
http://www.the370z.com/members/megan...ccw-1-kink.jpg

On the 3rd laps at Corner #4, I slided off track at the worse part where its commun to see some sand on the track, because most peoples cut it !

this is the video of my friend following me on the first session.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1n8tdTPGd6o

The only part that broke was one of the front link holding the splitter , I had 2 spare just in case something like this would happen ! which it did .

That was one session wasted because the (novice)was getting lined-up to get on the track for their first session after us. I couldnt get fast enough in front of them to be allowed back on the track.

I thought I would finally be able to do some clean lap on my second session.
I went on the track in the mid pack. It was a mistake of my part because after 3-4 laps I got black flagged !!!! ok what did I have done now ?
It happen that I passed someone in a restricted zone . On my first event 4 year ago that zone was ok to pass someone if a point by was given and also with the habit to quickly pass someone as soon as I see them giving me a point by !..
oh well another wasted session . I tried to check the tire pressure right before going to see the mashall to know what I did wrong.
but other than that .. not much !

soo again.
I told myself , be carefull now ! only focus on the car handling !!!
once the 3rd session started . On the 3rd lap !! Yes the 3rd laps ! a Red flag was UP !!
I was there in my car thinking, ** ok this is not funny !!**
the reason of that red flag was because of him ... * he is alright btw and safe*
http://www.the370z.com/members/megan...12-mosport.jpg

There was 2 sessions left before the actual Time Attack.
I had to make sure everything was setup properly !
The 4th session went quite smoothly as I was the fastest in my class already .
On the 5th session I was 3rd by .3 sec !!
I couldnt see anything at that point that could make me gain those 3 tenth !!

Once our 5th session was finish, it was the time for the Drift Competition to start.
The black clouds full of rain was now right over us threatening to piss us off !
It looked like it would be raining for hours , I had to make a decision as to what to do.
Either stay with the RA1 on (shaved) or put my street tire (RE-11).

I finaly decided to put my RE-11 on ! and disconnecting the rear swaybar.
http://www.the370z.com/members/megan...ure52928-a.jpg
http://www.the370z.com/members/megan...ure52936-a.jpg
http://www.the370z.com/members/megan...ure52927-a.jpg

After barely 15-20mins of drifting competition , they stop it and reported the drift after our time attack .
A lot of peoples was getting their car ready for the rain but some didnt had the chance to do it !
I was in one of the last group to get on the track for the Time attack .

As the time went by, the sun started to show up and the track getting dryer and dryer!!
The fast lap time started to show up around the 9th group (of 14 in total as I was in the 12th)

With barely 15-ish mins to go before I get called to be in line.
I took the choice to go back with the RA1 as the fast lap time was getting in the 1;05-1;06.

This is when I got called to be on the line.
It doesnt look like the ground is wet much but the track was humid.
http://www.the370z.com/members/megan...ure52920-a.jpg

Then it was my turn to be on the track
the first warm-up lap was what it actualy is ! warming up as much as I could the tires and brakes !!
The track was relatively quite good at most of the corners but one at Corner# 8

I didnt had time to reconnect the rear swaybar , which made the car understeering quite a lot as it was normaly setup with a bit of oversteer.
Having the most stiff swaybar and no rear sway bar (hotchkis) its no suprise what the end result would be !!

I decided to give a full go on the first timed lap which normaly would also have been a warm up lap.
Lap 1 resulted to be in the 1;02 ! I was good with this and decided to push a little more on the second lap.
The grip was there pretty much everywhere but corner #8 which still had some standing water and humid track , I understeered and then the rear slided off a litte bit. Everything else was good during that lap which gave me a 1:01.1 !!

http://www.the370z.com/members/megan...ure52934-a.jpg

Once I saw that lap time I knew I could try to do better !
but I quickly forgot about not having a rear sway bar !!!!!!
this was my big mistake becase on the fastest part of the track it also has a left hander corner (#10 ) which I use to trailbrake all the way to the next corner (Apex #2 )
I couldnt make it at all because of 2 reasons !
late braking and understeering !!! I quickly decided to try my luck going right down the hill ( Chute on the map )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOYpStkuIk8

I went back on the track for the normal cooldown and went back in the pit , after a quick inspection nothing was broken or bent.

I got told that I was the fastest at the moment and ahead of everyone in my class ! :)

Once everything was finish and done we went to get our trophy !!! it was fast and furious

Megan370z 08-20-2012 06:22 AM

Well thats it . I blew the engine ... probably due to oil starvation during a spin doing some left and right then tank slapper doing a 360.

wheee! 08-20-2012 07:24 AM

Mr. Baker sent me a text about this last night! Bad news man....

Are you taking it in for an estimate for rebuild? Was there a catastrophic failure/piston out the wall of the engine type thing or just a dead engine?.....

Maybe a good time to think about a built motor! Sorry dude. Blown motor sucks....

simota1 08-20-2012 07:25 AM

so are you gonna rebuild a new motor?

Megan370z 08-20-2012 07:37 AM

Im gonna try to pass it under warranty , there is a new dealership here in town and im sure they wont accept the car .

my next bet is to put the car back completly stock as much as I can and Tow the car to another dealership where I went the last year for a new tranny under warranty (7AT).

if that doesnt work ...

There is a few option there and there

- rebuilt the short block and install my old spare Engine HR head with big cam !
- Get a used long block somewhere

if nothing is possible
maybe an engine swap for a lighter one ?

birdmanx1 08-20-2012 08:43 AM

Sorry to read that. Hopefully you get it sorted out in no time.

M.Bonanni 08-20-2012 12:23 PM

Sucks to hear. Go for the HR head swap to ditch the VVEL! Thats what all of the Grand-Am/World Challenge 370Z teams ended up doing.

Im thinking about this but im not sure how to make everything work together.
the problem with this is that my 370z came with the 7AT ...
I would also need to swap the tranny if I go with the HR ECU since it was mounted with a 6MT ...

I do have the whole HR engine /6MT tranny w/shifter / wiring harness / ECU

I would need the pedal assemby / Clutch master cylinder for the HR tranny / clucth hose line / and some other stuff that I am missing.

also its been a bit more than 3 years that the spare HR engine/tranny didnt run ...

Megan370z 08-27-2012 07:36 PM

A few guys already know that I blew my engine at my last Time Attack.
this is some update from my diagnostic .

I towed it back from the dealership last saturday so I started right away to remove everthing in front of the engine to have a full acces to the front .

I removed both cam cover to look at the chain since I suspected a broken or loose chain .
the driver side chain that connect both Intake and exhaust cam was quite loose to compare with the passenger side !
until I compare them side by side , I suspect one of them elongated !

next step was to remove the driver valve cover to see what went wrong in the end where the knocking was comming from in the beginning while the engine was still running porly

Located at piston#6 ,, look alright and wet from the oil... not much sign of any defects.
http://www.the370z.com/members/megan...ny-defects.jpg

something is missing there !
http://www.the370z.com/members/megan...sing-there.jpg

humm broken pawl and pin somewhere in the bottom of the engine head.
http://www.the370z.com/members/megan...ngine-head.jpg

the wrose where everything went bad from the engine code I got first ... piston#4 VVEl look very dried up and rusted already ,, !!
http://www.the370z.com/members/megan...ed-already.jpg

dried up lobe from a broken VVEL pawl. the rust is already getting there !!! must have been red hot.

the wrose where everything went bad from the engine code I got first ... piston#4 VVEl look very dried up and rusted already ,, !!

I wonder what composition is in the center that melted !
located on piston#2
http://www.the370z.com/members/megan...d-piston-2.jpg

you can see the dried VVEL camshaft and the broken pawl , VVEL valve from piston #2
http://www.the370z.com/members/megan...e-piston-2.jpg

side holding pin pawl getting out !!!! ,, VVEL valve from piston #4 , the dried up VVEL is due to an extreme heat generated by the lack or lubrification !
http://www.the370z.com/members/megan...rification.jpg

soo after this ... my conclusion would be
do not rev up to 8000 rpm !! and avoid taking corner at 1.35-1.4G

Glokwork 08-27-2012 08:18 PM

Sorry to hear about the engine man. I really hope everything works out and let us know how it goes at the dealer!

its hard to contest agaisnt picture showing every mod you have done .....
like I said the new dealership lack experience and went way to fast in their procedure and she agreed with me..
she really wanted to have the job (manager) that would have gave some hand on experience also to their tech ! ..

too bad they failed

Megan370z 09-02-2012 10:16 AM

a quick update on this ..

I got a complete HR engine in my basement now ! :)
http://www.the370z.com/members/megan...3-img-1821.jpg

the VHR engine should be removed from the Z next weekend and will be deeply inspected.

diddy535 09-12-2012 08:32 PM

Sorry about your engine. This is an amazing journal though, hope the rebuild goes well! Keep us posted!

Megan370z 09-22-2012 05:49 PM

today was the day that I removed the engine/tranny!

I had to stop because I do not have the special socket to remove those bolt on the Lower cylinder block. it seem like an inverted Tork bolt.

there is quite a few picture for those interessted .
Tomorrow I will try to find the needed socket to go deeper in the engine ! :)

Megan370z 09-27-2012 03:59 PM

I made 2 other threads in the Engine & Drivetrain about

More details on the blown VVEL engine on every page as more pictures was added
http://www.the370z.com/engine-drivet...lown-vvel.html

and some finding on the 7AT Flex wheel (type of flywheel)
http://www.the370z.com/engine-drivet...wner-look.html

there has been quite a few possible projects, each of them were quite interessting.
- LSx
- VK56
- VQ35hr long rod engine
- OEM Vq35HR (7500rpm rev limit ! ) swap and keep the blown engine to rebuilt it later on with the proper mods

I got quite a few parts priced at, such as those nice big cam 310dur 13.7mm of lift
drysump which wasnt too too expensive after all, but quite over of my current budget.

the logical path that I think I should take would only get that ViPec V88 ECU and install only my spare HR engine as it is. (but slightly modified with baffled oil pan and some engine tweaking.)
my budget cant afford that 15k $ I need to get everything ready by June 2013.
then my idea is in 2014, where everything happens.

Uprev is good up to a certain point and Ive been shown and explained why. Even me having only an N/A engine setup it teached me that Uprev is soo basic that it isnt as good as people thinks. But its the only plug-in software that can easily be tuned on the 370z.

Megan370z 11-03-2012 02:51 PM

a quick update just saying this project isnt dead !

Im doing some tweaking/cleaning and re-assembly of my spare engine

It seems to me that putting a VQ35 engine would be a 'downgrade' for the 370z . . . The VQ37VHR is more advanced/powerful and was designed for the 370z (and G37) chassis, yea ? . . The VK56 V8 in the car would be along the lines of building a race car or drift car: very cool ~ ~ 55

I somewhat agree with you.
but knowing where my project is going, the HR head is the way to go.
Actualy it will be an VQ37HR minus the V which is the VVEL setup.

but mind you if you can spare the $$ for an VK56 , let me know ! I will be glad to do it.

My budget doesnt allow me to send the engine block which had the blown VVEL & oil pump to a machinst and have everything done to it.

so I took my spare HR engine.I am in the process to stroke it to 3.7 from the VHR crank ,VHR connecting rod and HR piston.
Big cam and custom piston is later in 2013.

http://www.the370z.com/members/megan...-hr-piston.jpg

Megan370z 11-04-2012 06:13 PM

quick update !

I just finish installing every HR pistons with the VHR crank/connecting rod.
that wasnt very easy to do !!!
there is 2 spots on the HR piston that need to be modified due to clearance.
It took about 8 hours only to deal with those HR pistons and comparing with the VHR piston.

1 step closer for an VQ37HR !! :happydance:

im still laughing at you

you still fail to see why the wing is on the car and not on for the look

who care if it look ridiculous anyway ??

Any pics of the block with the HR pistons installed?
Do the HR pistons have a shorter piston height? (hard to tell from the pics but it kinda looks that way)
If so, what do you think the overall CR would be?

nice work btw :D

sixpax 11-20-2012 08:19 PM

some cool stuff here ... except for the blown motor of course. you got some stones of steel doing some of this stuff ... phuck anybody that don't like (understand) the wing ... hope you get things back together and back to the track better than ever !

when I took the picture both piston were hold by the same wrist pin.
the top base of the piston looked to be the same height.

I would say the CR should remain pretty much the same as the VHR engine...
the VHR piston are more flat with 2 valve relief
the HR piston have a bit of a dome with 4 valve relief
my guesstimate would be 10.8:1
unless a known engine builder correct me on this !

no problem,

I just find those kind of comment a bit useless for a track car built progress

who care if it look ridiculous or too big for the car ? ,,
if you have the power its never too big !!!

as long as it work the way it is intended the rest is only a bonus.

trust me if I had some big pocket, things would be different.

Its been a while that I worked on the spare HR engine.
Anyway, today I completed the first HR head for cams clearancing
it took me a freaking long time completing one, probably 6 hours
the second one shouldnt be this long.
